The underworld is calling us, so if you're ready to take a ride on the River Styx and pet the dog in the form of Cerberus all over again, Hades 2 is sure to raise the bar in (hopefully) 2023.

Supergiant Games broke the rogue-like mould when Hades first entered early access in 2018. Since then, it's had a mainstream release, swept the awards, and reminded us why Greek mythology was our favourite bit of history at school.

What's The Story Of Hades 2?

Hades 2's announcement came as a major surprise at 2022's The Game Awards, especially as Supergiant's Greg Kasavin told NME in August 2021 the team didn't want to count its chickens before they hatched.

Although the opening of the trailer looked like we'd be getting a brand-new game in the style of Hades, it quickly became clear this was a full-blown sequel - albeit without our lead.

In Hades 2, you take on the role of Melinoë, who is the sister of Hades' Zagreus, and is the so-called Princess of the Underworld. Much like the first game saw Zag trying to take on Hades, the sequel has Melinoë tackling Chronos - the Greek personification of time.

Also along for the ride, we see some new faces from the Greek pantheon, with Moros (Doom Incarnate), the addition of Apollo (the God of Light) - who was previously added in by modders - and more.

There's the typical rogue-like gameplay, and we see Melinoë using her various boons to gain an advantage over these cruel creatures. Basically, if you haven't played Hades, now's the time.

When Will Hades 2 Release?

As other Supergiant games have been standalone, no one expected Hades 2... well, not yet. The aptly named Hades 2 is currently being worked on for early access, with more news expected in 2023.

You can currently wishlist Hades 2 on Steam and the Epic Store, and while it's so far only confirmed for PC, there are plans for a mainstream console release just like the OG.

A post on the Supergiant site says the developer will share information on which consoles "closer to when it's complete," but for the time being, Hades 2 remains in full production. Don't get your hopes up though, as the team warned there's still "a lot left to build."

Either way, Hades 2 has a lot of pressure considering how the first game has become a god in its own right. Dare we wish to pick up the story of god and monsters in early access next year? Our weapons are already yearning for the blood of the Titans, so here's hoping.
