Searching for all of the Horizon Forbidden West Black Box locations? It isn't easy as they are dotted around the Forbidden West. Thankfully, our guide makes it easy.

Horizon Forbidden West is a vast open-world with a lot of things to do in it. One kind of collectable item you can find are Black Boxes, the recorders from destroyed aircraft.

While in Memorial Grove, you can find an NPC called Untalla. She will tell you about the Black Boxes, she collects them and asks that you bring her any you find. Of course, she will reward you for your efforts.

Untalla has a range of rare resources, like Thunderjaw Tails and Stormbird Storm Cannons, which she will trade to you for one Black Box each. She has twelve items and there are twelve Black Boxes, so you are only getting one of each.

After speaking with Untalla, Aloy can pick up the signal of nearby any Black Box on her Focus. While out exploring the world, Aloy will react when a Black Box is nearby. To skip right to the chase, here are the locations of all twelve Black Boxes.

This Black Box is located far south of Plainsong. In the rocky part of the map, west of the Carja Camp, you will find this crashed plane on top of a ridge. When you reach the plane, use your spear to pry the door open. The Black Box is on the floor inside.

This Black Box is south-west of Plainsong, directly south of the Plainsong Vista Point, up in the mountains. You will find the Black Box in the north-east corner of the clearing. Use your Pullcaster to pull the rubble out, revealing the Black Box behind.

This Black Box is underwater, so you will need to acquire the diving mask during the main story before you can get this one. Far south of Plainsong, in the water near the ancient Titan, there is a plane wreck under the water. Swim down to this location, it isn’t hard to find as it is the only map marker in the middle of the lake, and find the plane. At the eastern end of it, pry open the door to get inside and find the Black Box.

This Black Box is east-northeast of Plainsong, near a Survey Drone. You will find the plane in many parts under a cliff. The Black Box is in the northernmost section, but we need to do a few things to get to it. Firstly, the door is locked and needs power. East of the plane section you will find a power cell near some more wreckage, in between two scavenger piles. Pick it up and bring it back to the plane to power the door and get inside.

Still, we are not finished. This part of the plane is full of vines, and to clear them you will need the Vine Cutter. This is acquired in the Greenhouse during a story mission, so progress the story to unlock it if you need to. With the Vine Cutter, attack the Metal Flower until it opens and use it to clear the vines. The Black Box will be on the ground to collect once they are cleared.

This is one of the more straightforward Black Boxes to get. It is in the far north of the map, in the same valley as the Ninmah Research Lab you visit during the main quest. There is a melee pit here called Trial’s End, just east of that, you’ll find the plane embedded in the cliff.

Once you find it, getting the Black Box is as simple as climbing up to the plane and going inside. Pry the door open and find the Black Box sitting in the corner.

This Black Box is buried in the desert. North-west of Las Vegas, just south of the local salvage contractor, you will find plane wreckage sticking out of the ground. There are vines covering the broken fuselage, so use the Vine Cutter on the Metal Flower to remove them.

Once inside, pry open the door. There will be a box at the end of the plane, just grab it and drag it back to uncover the Black Box.

This one is hard to miss. From just outside Memorial Grove, head south across the bridge. As you are crossing, you will see the plane above you on the left. Continue past the plane and around to the left to find a spot where you can climb up. Approach the back of the plane, you should see a spot you can grapple to. Use that to get inside, then make your way to the front of the plane to get the Black Box.

This Black Box is located on a plane that has been appropriated by the citizens of Salt Bite. Head to the settlement, if you haven’t been it is directly north of Memorial Grove, just south of a large lake. Use your Focus to scan for the signal, and you will see it coming from the back of one of the shops. Use your Pullcaster to open the grate at the back of the shop, then climb through to find the Black Box at the other end of the plane.

For this one, you might want to start from Fall’s Edge. This plane is out in the jungle, just north-east of the nearby salvage contractor. South of Fall’s Edge there is Redeye Watcher Site, the Black Box is the next icon to the south after that. Mark it on your map and head there to find the wreckage.

The Black Box is in the front section of the plane, but the door needs power. Use the Vine Cutter to access the back section to the south and inside you will find a power cell. Bring it to the door, open it and grab the Black Box inside.

This Black Box is high up in the Sheerside Mountains. Having the Sunwing mount is recommended, or you will have to do some serious mountain climbing to get here. The location is north-west of The Bulwark, you’ll know it when you find an icon directly beside a shelter on your map.

The plane is in two pieces, and your Black Box is in the front part. There is a locked door denying access, and it needs power to open. Head up to the shelter nearby and you will find the power cell you need. Bring it down, plug it in and grab the Black Box inside.

How easy this one is to get depends on whether or not you have a Sunwing. The Black Box is on the south side of the mountain directly south of the Stand of the Sentinels Tallneck. With a Sunwing, you can fly directly to it, move a crate out of the way and grab the Black Box inside the plane.

Without a Sunwing, you have to do a bit more. East of the Black Box location there is a Campfire near a Fire Bellowback Site. From the Campfire, head west. Use the zipline, then climb up above the platform. Continue west until you reach a gap, with part of the plane ahead of you. Jump from the gap toward the plane and use your grapple to get inside. Pry the door open to exit this part of the plane. The part of the plane with the Black Box will now be directly in front of you.

Horizon Forbidden West Black Boxes: Isle of Spires

This Black Box is found in the northern area of the Isle of Spires. West of The Digsite and east of a Charger Site, this plane can only be entered from the west. The destroyed plane is on top of a waterfall, but you don’t need to get inside of it. Follow the wreckage down to the edge of the cliff and you will find the Black Box in an open section of the plane.

Now that you have all 12 Black Boxes, return to Untalla to turn them in. She will give you materials for each one, including some very rare machine parts. She will also reward you with the Wings of the Ten legendary Blastsling. In turn, she will promise to study the Black Boxes and use them to educate people.

That is everything you need to get all of the Horizon Forbidden West Black Boxes. For more handy info on the game, why not check out Horizon Forbidden West Vista Points.
