Sonic the Hedgehog has had a very interesting year, having releases within every major avenue of entertainment throughout 2022. Not only have we seen a blockbuster sequel to the hit Sonic the Hedgehog movie, but we also got the Netflix series Sonic Prime, a re-release of the original four games in Sonic Origins, and more recently, the launch of the new open-world game - Sonic Frontiers

Whilst the latter didn't exactly set the gaming world on fire, Frontiers was still the best critically received Sonic game in years. At one point, Frontiers' Metacritic user score on PC was even better than that of Elden Ring. Overall, it's been a pretty solid year for the blue blur, and the head of Frontier's developer, Takashi Iizuka at Sega's Sonic Team, couldn't agree more.

What Takashi Iizuka Said About Sonic In 2022

Talking with Japanese website, Famitsu, for an end-of-year creator interview - which was then translated by Gematsu - Sonic Team head celebrated the big year for Sonic, along with teasing what's to come during 2023. "This past year was the biggest year in Sonic history, including the release of the movie sequel, new titles Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers, and the Netflix animation Sonic Prime", said Iizuka.

He followed with "we are preparing a second wave to keep the fans happy and maintain that momentum going into 2023. We already announced additional content for Sonic Frontiers, but there is a lot more outside of that, so please look forward to it.”

Whether the extra content outside of Sonic Frontiers Iizuka mentioned will be more of the Netflix series, the confirmed Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie (which has been teased to feature Shadow), the Knuckles spin-off series or another game from the developer is currently unknown.

Whichever way you look at it though, Sonic the Hedgehog has been having a good run. We just hope he can keep up the pace in 2023.
