The Materia system is one of the most essential parts you’ll need to understand if you’re going to get through your battles in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, so we’re here to break down the Materia you should be keeping an eye out for in the game – and the best for each of your playable party members.

Whether you’re using Summons or Synergy Abilities, there are plenty of ways to build your characters in FF7 Rebirth, but the Materia you use is by far the most important.

The beauty of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is that you can arrange your Materia to create unique builds that bring out the best in your characters. Below, we’ve broken down the Materia we used for each character and how they work in tandem with them.

Aerith

It’s no secret that Aerith is the most powerful magic user in the team, so loading her up with plenty of offensive, boosting and healing magic is going to keep your party topped up with health and hone in on the elemental weaknesses of your enemies.

Materia	Effect
Prayer Materia	Allows you to restore your party’s HP with Pray.
Healing Materia	Allows you to use healing spells.
HP Up Materia	Increases your max HP.
MP Up Materia	Increases your max MP.
Item Economizer Materia	Allows you to use items without having to consume ATB after performing a number of actions. This effect will automatically trigger during battle.
Fire Materia	Allows you to use fire magic.
Ice Materia	Allows you to use ice magic.
Poison Materia	Allows you to use toxin-related spells.
Binding Materia	Allows you to use disruptive spells.
Empowerment Materia	Allows you to use physical and magic attack-strengthening spells. Pairing with Warding Materia grants resistance to physical and magic attack reduction.
Item Master Materia	Increases the effectiveness of items used in battle.
Level Boost Materia	Increases the level of linked Materia by one. Has no effect when paired with Materia at maximum level.
Luck Up Materia	Increases your luck.

Barret’s ranged abilities are second to none, particularly his unique Overcharge power that can deal a huge amount of damage with a single shot. So, when you’re not using him, having him be able to freely use his unique ability could give you that extra shot of damage you need in a tense battle.

Lightning Materia	Allows you to use lightning magic.
Enemy Skill Materia	Allows you to learn certain enemy techniques and use them as abilities. The Sonic Boom ability can be used by default.
Enervation Materia	Allows you to use physical and magic defense-reducing spells. Pairing with warding Materia grants resistance to physical and magic defense reduction.
Auto-Unique Ability Materia	Allows an ally to automatically use unique abilities when not actively controlled during battle.
Healing Materia	Allows you to use healing spells.
Wind Materia	Allows you to use wind magic.
HP Up Materia	Increases your max HP.
Ice Materia	Allows you to use ice magic.

Cait Sith is a tricky character to master (he always has been), often relying on luck that can either be devastating for your enemies, or a potential hindrance for your team. So, providing him with as much Luck Up Materia as possible is going to help the odds swing in your favour.

Fire Materia	Allows you to use fire magic.
Ice Materia	Allows you to use ice magic.
Luck Up Materia (as many as possible)	Increases your luck.
Level Boost Materia (linked with Luck Up)	Increases the level of linked Materia by one. Has no effect when paired with Materia at maximum level.
ATB Boost Materia (linked with Luck Up)	Doubles ATB when activated.
HP Up Materia	Increases your max HP.

Cloud is your everyman and likely the character you’re going to be using the most, so making sure he has a bit of everything is paramount. Boosting his stats and EXP will give him an edge in battle that can be felt however you make up your team.

AP Up Materia	Increase the amount of AP earned for linked Materia.
Assess Materia	Allows you to view enemy info using Assess.
Cleansing Materia	Allows you to use curative spells.
Healing Materia	Allows you to use healing spells.
EXP Up Materia	Increases the amount of EXP you earn in battle.
Fire Materia	Allows you to use fire magic.
Magnify Materia	Allows you to expand the range of spells with the linked Materia.
Subversion Materia	Allows you to use subversive spells.
Empowerment Materia	Allows you to use physical and magic attack-strengthening spells. Pairing with Warding Materia grants resistance to physical and magic attack reduction.
Chakra Materia	Allows you to restore your own HP and cure Poison with Chakra. The amount restored is relative to damage received – the lower your HP, the more that is restored.
Morph Materia	Allows you to turn enemies into items with Morph. Enemies whose health has fallen below a certain amount can be defeated in this fashion.
Luck Up Materia	Increases your luck.
Precision Defense Focus Materia	Improves the functionality of blocking with perfect timing.

Red XIII

Red XIII’s attacks become more aggressive following as he blocks and defends himself, so focusing on Materia that complement his blocking, like the Steadfast Block Materia, will help give him an edge in any battle.

Poison Materia	Allows you to use toxin-related spells.
Auto-Cast Materia	Allows an ally to automatically use spells with the linked Materia when not actively controlled during battle.
Steadfast Block Materia	Further decreases enemy damage and fills the ATB gauge faster when guarding.
ATB Boost Materia	Doubles ATB when activated.
Subversion Materia	Allows you to use subversive spells.
Precision Defense Focus Materia	Improves the functionality of blocking with perfect timing.

Tifa

Tifa can pack a punch (literally) so having her ATB rapidly fill will let her raise her unique abilities more effectively. By making sure her ATB is constantly full, she’ll be able to deliver more powerful attacks with her already high physical damage.

Chakra Materia	Allows you to restore your own HP and cure Poison with Chakra. The amount restored is relative to damage received – the lower your HP, the more that is restored.
ATB Stagger Materia	Increases ATB when staggering an enemy.
Wind Materia	Allows you to use wind magic.
Magic Efficiency Materia	Reduces the MP cost of spells with the linked Materia in battle.
Prayer Materia	Allows you to restore the party’s HP with Pray.
Fortification Materia	Allows you to use physical and magic defence-strengthening spells. Pairing with Warding Materia grants resistance to physical and magic defence reduction.
HP Up Materia	Increases your max HP.
Fire and Ice Materia	Allows you to use fire and ice magic.
Revival Materia	Allows you to use revival spells.

Yuffie

Yuffie is a great all-rounder, with a mix of magic and physical attack potential, so the Empowerment Materia is hands-down one of the best to run on her. Additionally, if you fancy leaning into her lore as a Materia hunter, then the Steal Materia is particularly fun to use with her.
