Ever since Heavyweight Champ was released in 1976, fighting games have always been a celebration of what an arcade has to offer. Even now, as new Tekken and Mortal Kombat titles grace new-gen consoles, the core essence of the genre is engrained in the sticky floors of an arcade.

Riot Games is now honouring that ethos with its upcoming 2XKO tag-team fighter game. Despite being a title exclusive to new-gen consoles, its in-game lobby will be an arcade that has already blown the minds of fans.

2XKO's lobby is a true testament to arcades

2XKO's Alpha test is now live, and albeit with a few minor setbacks like having an extremely overpowered Ekko, the tag-team concept appears to be resonating well with fans of both League of Legends and general fighting games.

But the element that is really knocking the socks off fans is its lobby. The arcade layout lets players wander around in a 3D area before entering the 2D matches, but what's special about it is that you can walk up to different machines and watch live games unfold.

Instantly, players have hailed this feature, which sets the bar for what all games should have moving forward. After meeting 2XKO with immediate applause, they took to social media to expand on just how good the lobby is.

"Every lobby trying to replicate arcades without this was fundamentally incomplete," one fan said, while a second added, "Took what Tekken did and made it better."

"Normally I hate this style of lobbies. I prefer the old blazblue ct or sf4 style of lobbies... but this feature alone is so great. Can't wait to watch lobby beef sets on the big screen," added another fan.

Fundamentally, 2XKO might have a lot to learn from other fighting games before its full launch, but it has already etched itself in fighting game history with one of the best inventions yet.
