A screenshot of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which was shared alongside a cover reveal article, has led to some speculation over whether or not a character from a Final Fantasy novel could be making their way into the game.

Though nothing is confirmed at this stage, the inclusion of the character could explain additional story elements which have been hinted at in previous interviews.

A screenshot suggests a character from the FFVII novels could be coming to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

As spotted by Inverse, a screenshot which was shared as part of a Game Informer cover story about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth seems to hint at the role a forgotten character could play in the game.

The screenshot shows Kyrie Canaan, a character who has previously appeared in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Kyrie is also featured in the novel The Kids Are Alright, within which she operates a detective agency alongside another character who has not previously appeared in the games: Evan Townshend.

In the novel, Kyrie and Evan operate a detective agency together in the slums of Midgar and, while there is no direct confirmation that this will be the case in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Kyrie does appear to be working behind a desk in the screenshot provided.

This could mean that Evan Townshend may be making his in-game debut if Square Enix decides to bring aspects from the novel into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

What role could Evan play in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Though there is no confirmation that Evan will actually be in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, his story arc in The Kids Are Alright would definitely add some interesting elements to the game.

Within the novel, Evan uncovers a secret which changes everything he thought he knew about himself, namely that he is the illegitimate child of President Shinra.

The introduction of this storyline could explain why creative director Tetsuya Nomura told Inverse in an interview earlier this year that Rufus Shinra would have “new episodes” in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth that were not in the original game, as the discovery of an illegitimate brother would almost definitely cause some trouble.

He said: “He will have some sort of new episodes that do not exist in the original, where we will get to know more about him and dig deeper."

What we do know for certain is that, whether Evan makes it to the game or not, there is clearly new content which will help us learn more about characters like Rufus.

If Evan is added into the game, it will be exciting to see what this could mean for other less known characters becoming more important in the future.
