Activision is trolling Call of Duty cheaters for its own research

Call of Duty cheaters are being trolled by Activision, with a new update to the RICOCHET anti-cheat making them invisible and stealing their guns.

Ahead of a huge Warzone update - where Activision will release Ranked into the battle royale for the first time in four years - the developers have been hard at work upgrading their RICOCHET anti-cheat software.

The software has often been criticised for being less effective than it should be, with hackers and cheaters populating a wealthy percentage of lobbies.

However, as of April 4, Ricochet has been upgraded. Now, those behind the anti-cheat are catching hackers left, right, and centre...but not without having a bit of fun first.

Activision trolls hackers after upgrading Ricochet

The latest update has seen Warzone's anti-cheat upgrade its counter-troll kit. Previously, we've seen the software remove all damage from hackers' weapons, but now it's removing the guns altogether.

In the first quirk, Ricochet will now "disarm" players who are using cheats, removing their weapons and the ability to get kills. Another troll being deployed will turn regular players "invisible" from hackers, meaning sneaks can't shoot their enemies and renders the hacks useless.

These jokes will come into play when a hacker has been detected by the software, which will be followed with account and IP bans. We're sure it's not a perfect capture, but the RICOCHET team is using it to research cheaters and hacks with the hope to improve in Season 3.

Activision cracks down on Cronus users with new update

Activision and Ricochet aren't just cracking down on the usual hackers too. Now, the RICOCHET update also encompasses players using the Cronus software - detecting and banning them.

"Ricochet has developed and tested a detection for third-party hardware devices that alter the Call of Duty gameplay experience," said Call of Duty in a blog post.

"These devices act as a passthrough for controllers on PC and console and, when used improperly or maliciously, can provide a player with the ability to gain an unfair gameplay advantage, such as reducing or eliminating recoil."

Third-party software like Cronus won't work in Call of Duty, meaning that controller players shouldn't be able to completely remove their recoil. In theory, Warzone can finally be a battleground of skill instead of a matter of the best cheats winning. Yeah, we'll believe it when we see it.
