Alan Wake 2 was hailed as one of 2023’s scariest games with an oppressive atmosphere, gore, horrifying monsters and frequent jumpscares.

The game’s latest update makes Alan Wake 2 a little bit less terrifying, however it also adds some important accessibility features which will allow more people to enjoy the title.

A new Alan Wake 2 update has made the game a bit less frightening but for good reason

One of the most frightening elements of Alan Wake 2 is easily the flashing jumpscares which occur throughout the game.

The recent update allows players to tone down these horror flashes, instead choosing either low or normal visual and audio intensity to help make the game more fitting to their own needs.

It seems as though this is a feature which has reportedly been “much-requested” by players.

While the update may make the game slightly less frightening for anyone who has been avoiding the game due to the fear factor, this is actually an accessibility feature which will allow even more people to play and enjoy Alan Wake 2.

The update will allow players with photosensitivity issues and other conditions such as PTSD to play the game more comfortably without worrying about their medical conditions being triggered.

Players are generally pleased that horror flashes are now able to be toned down, with many commenting on the importance of the feature.

“Oh man, that's awesome that there is now an option to tone down the horror flashes/jump scares,” said one Twitter user.

Another said: “Appreciate the hard work and specifically the horror flash setting.”

Not everyone seems to understand the importance of the setting however, with several commenting on how it seems unnecessary to remove the horror elements from horror games.

One user said: “A survival horror game and people ask for an option to remove scary moments lol. What a world we live in.”

The update did more than just tone down flashing lights

As well as allowing players to decide how they want their flashing jumpscares, the update also added a Chapter Select function which will allow players to revisit any of their previously unlocked missions.

This means you can relive We Sing in all of its musical glory as many times as you would like.

The update also included several fixes for several gameplay, UI and audio glitches and bugs.
