American McGee’s Alice Is Getting A Live-Action Series

The latest live-action game series is an odd one, as American McGee's Alice is being given its own show, with X-Men's David Hayter as showrunner.

We're going down the rabbit hole, as our latest TV obsession is popping by for a Mad Hatter's tea party. While the warped world of Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland is weird enough as it is, American McGee's Alice merges this cast of colourful characters with the idea of a straight-up survival horror.

First released in 2000, American McGee's Alice was met with great reception and has gone on to become a cult classic of the horror scene. Alice: Madness Returns was released in 2011, and although there has been continued progress on a potential third game, the threequel hasn't come to pass (yet). Could a TV series be the push it needs?

What Is The American McGee's Alice Series?

American McGee's Alice

Hot off the press at The Hollywood Reporter, American McGee's Alice is galloping forward. More than just being in the early stages, the live-action reimagining has bagged David Hayter as showrunner. For those who don't know, Hayter's impressive work includes writing the first two X-Men movies, Zack Snyder's Watchmen, and his work on the DOOM and Quake games. Of course, some people know him better as the voice of Solid Snake.

In a statement, Hayter explained, "American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns game series is a groundbreaking reimagining of the classic tale. It takes you into the heart of a corrupted Wonderland and throws light into shadowy corners the world has never seen. I am beyond excited to bring this world of madness and wonder to a global audience." It's part of EA'd plans to "broaden the video games market."

American McGee's Alice tells the story of the titular heroine after she's committed to a mental asylum following the death of her parents in a house fire. Alice finds herself lured back to Wonderland by the White Rabbit, but this time, the residents have become murderous and bloodthirsty monsters.

Have We Heard About An Alice Series Before?

Although the announcement of American McGee's Alice comes as something of a shock, an adaptation has been in the works for decades. Back in 2001, a movie adaptation was announced with a tentative 2003 release date. After losing Wes Craven as director and falling into development hell, 2005 saw Sarah Michelle Gellar tipped to take the lead, but by 2008 the project had stalled again.

Last year, American McGee announced that a third game was on the way, with Alice: Asylum poised to be the darkest entry yet. However, without the backing of EA, McGee is going it alone in hopes of publishing the next chapter. With a live-action series to bring new fans to the franchise, here's hoping we'll keep returning to Wonderland for years to come.
