When it comes to the most influential consoles of all time, let's be honest, Nintendo likely takes the crown. From the NES popularising home gaming to the Game Boy taking it on the move, the Nintendo 64 helped usher us into 3D gaming, and the Wii brought in motion controls. Now, the Switch is a home-portably hybrid.

That's not to downplay the works of SEGA, Sony, Microsoft, and the rest, but when it comes to constantly reinventing, Nintnedo reigns supreme. Everyone has a favourite console, and for those of us who are a certain age, the Nintendo 64 is the absolute GOAT. Now, it's getting a new-gen refresh.

During its lifespan from 1996 to 2002, it's hard to believe what Nintendo did for gaming. Releasing bangers like Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and GoldenEye 007, these titles are still defining the games we play today.

Plans for the 64DD fell through in the West, meaning the Nintendo 64 was cut short when it was on the cusp of being something even greater. Now, that black box is coming back with a vengeance. While we've all seen the emulation projects that give us 4K N64 games with ray tracing, you can get the real deal.

Pocket Analogue's latest venture is the Analogue 3D - bringing us a 4K N64 that does so much more than it says on the tin. According to Analogue's Christoper Taber (via IGN), the Analogue 3D lets the company "create incomprehensibly profound Original Display Modes."

The Analogue 3D beefs up the N64, adding 4K resolution, wireless and Bluetooth support alongside four original controller ports. If you don't want to pull your classic N64 controllers down from the attic, Analogue has partnered with 8BitDo to create a wireless controller for the console.

We're promised that no matter what the region, Analogue 3D will have 100% compatibility with every N64 cartridge. Be warned, it won't play copyrighted ROM files or support OpenFPGA software.

For those who haven't heard of Analogue, it's a hardware company known for revamping classic consoles for a modern audience. Effectively taking obsolete tech, stripping out its innards, and turning it into new-gen consoles, the company has seen its biggest success with the Analogue Pocket that was released in 2021.

Taber said, "This is one that nobody thought was possible," thanks to the N64's notorious difficulty to emulate. Analogue is planning to release the Analogue 3D in 2024, although it's currently keeping the finished design under wraps. Although we're expecting a sleeker version of the clunky N64, we've only got an ominous tease.

Nintendo hasn't released an N64 mini as it did with NES and SNES, but instead, there's been a slow trickle of its titles to the Switch Online library. There are some notable gaps in the catalogue, meaning the Analogue 3D can finally give us the retro gaming experience we've been craving since the N64 bowed out.
