We hope Mario's overalls have some deep pockets because it sounds like the Nintendo Switch successor could cost a pretty penny. Although we finally know a Switch 2 (or whatever it's called) is on the way, Nintendo has simply dangled a carrot by announcing it'll be revealed before the end of this fiscal year.
With gamers pencilling in March 31, 2025, as the deadline for the Switch 2 reveal, we're sadly no closer to actually getting the console in our hands. Recent rumbles suggested we're still a long way off from playing a Mario Odyssey sequel on the Switch 2, and now, we're dealt another blow.
Switch 2 could have a jaw-dropping price tag
When the Switch 2 launched in 2017, it came with a relatively reasonable $299.99/£279.99 price tag. Nintendo isn't known for slashing its prices on hardware or software, and with the OLED coming in at $349.99/£309.99, it's since introduced a pricier model.
The Switch 2 is tipped to cost even more, and while we expected a bit of a price hike between generations, Tokyo Security analyst Hideki Yasuda's new report suggests that the Switch 2 will come in at a beefy $499. This would presumably mark it in at around £450 for those in the UK and is a further jump from what we previously heard.
There's also a worrying caveat that some in Japan think it'll cost even more, with the $499 being a conservative estimation. No matter what's going on under the hood of the Switch 2, it's quite the jump if we're spending hundreds more. At least with no official release date yet, at least we've got time to save.
There is some good news, with Yasuda claiming that while Nintendo will stay true to its word and only announce the Switch 2 this financial year, it will still launch shortly after. Yasuda adds that the Switch successor will launch at some point between April and June 2025.
If this is the case, it should get the console neatly out of the way of GTA 6's launch toward the end of the year but also ensure we'll be playing in time for next Christmas. Even though confirmation the Switch 2 is coming is enough to sustain some, we're famished for some official acknowledgement from Nintendo.
