It's true that Apex Legends has always strayed away from elaborate crossovers - and instead focused on growing their own skin collections and developing the lore behind their characters - but how much longer can it hold out for?
Following Pathfinder's Star Wars-inspired skin, celebrating EA's other gaming franchise, the publishers behind Apex Legends have revealed that more pop culture collaborations could be coming. We always knew this day would come.
Apex Legends could be getting pop culture crossovers
Despite Respawn Entertainment and EA coming under fire over their skin collaborations in recent weeks, specifically with a debacle over esports-inspired team skins, they could be about to step into a new direction.
Taking inspiration from other battle royale titles such as Fortnite, PUBG, and Call of Duty, Electronic Arts has now claimed crossovers are not "off the table."
As revealed by IGN, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said, "I don't think anything is off the table," during an investor call. "I think that as we think about game IP today, it's kind of like comic book IP of 20 or 30 years ago. This is the IP that Gen Z and Jen Alpha perhaps identify mostly with," he added.
EA teases pop culture crossovers for Apex Legends
Fortnite has become the master of these types of crossovers in the past, with physical Star Wars characters being released in-game. For Apex Legends it might be more of an Overwatch type of approach, akin to their Doomfist One-Punch Man skin. We don't see Apex copying the style of CoD's Crash Bandicoot crossover.
"I think the opportunity for us to continue to grow and expand and stretch the nature of the experiences that we're able to offer to our global player base over the next decade and beyond is unfettered," Wilson added.
The crossovers could see the likes of Wraith get her iconic Naruto run back with what would be the ultimate collaboration. Other collaboration ideas see more Star Wars content being filtered in, with Mirage and Ballistic looking like the Revenge of the Sith Anakin and Obi-Wan combo.
