Akimbo Mozambiques

There have been hundreds of different metas in Apex Legends' weapon arsenal over the years. Nearly every gun has had its time in the limelight for at least a couple of weeks.

Whether it be guns in Care Packages (think Kraber or Mastiff when the game first launched) or ones that rely on hop-ups like the Alternator, there have been many, many different combinations of guns that have thrived and dominated play at the highest level.

Currently, Apex Legends might just have its most OP weapon ever though, as Season 22 brought forth the akimbo Mozambique, and the dual-wielded mini-shotguns have raced away in the standings at the ALGS Split 2 Playoffs, nearly beating out every other gun combined.

Akimbo Mozams

The Mozambique era has well and truly dawned on Apex Legends, following the Season 22 release of akimbo pistols, and the ALGS finals have highlighted just how far ahead the gun (or guns) is from the rest of the pack.

During the Split 2 Playoffs, across all four days, there was a total of 3201 kills, according to Apex Status, a statistics page plugged into the in-game client. The Mozambique was responsible for a whopping 1286 of them, dominating the entire weekend with 40% of the kills.

Compared to Split 1, this is almost double the percentage of overall kills from the highest-ranking weapon, where the Havoc earned roughly 25% of kills.

It's also the most kills any individual weapon has ever gotten in one split (on record).

  • Year 4 Split 2 - 1286 (Mozambique, combined)
  • Year 4 Split 1 - 810 (Havoc)
  • Year 3 Champs - 974 (R-99)
  • Year 3 Split 2 - 846 (Prowler)
  • Year 3 Split 1 - 615 (R-301)

In the most recent ALGS Playoffs, won by SpaceStation Gaming, the next best-performing weapon was the Nemesis, which, albeit matching the damage output of the Mozams due to its long range and poke damage, didn’t rack up half the kills of the shotguns.

Up close, these guns rule the meta with an iron fist, taking advantage of the care package haemorrhaged R-99 and the new dual-wield perks, even out-doing the massively-buffed Mastiff which would undoubtedly be the king of the hill if it wasn’t for the incredible range and fire-rate of this duf-duf merchant.

While the Split 2 playoffs sounded more like the end of an Eastenders episode with Hal and Zero glaring like the Mitchells and the sounds of the Mozams performing harmonies for the closing credits, they will likely go down in history as the highest-peaking gun of all time in competitive play.

That's ironic, considering the weapon had been utterly skippable for the better part of six years…
