The future of The Sims is on the way, and while we've been told The Sims 5 officially isn't happening, it's only made the mysterious Project Rene even more mysterious. First revealed in October 2022, Project Rene has been billed as an 'evolution' of The Sims, but not quite the full-blown sequel to The Sims 4 we hoped for.
Over the many years of The Sims games, it's fair to say that spin-offs haven't exactly performed, with the disaster of The Sims Online immediately springing to mind. Still, as Simmers crave that multiplayer experience the main games have failed to give us, Project Rene could scratch that itch.

We're sure Electronic Arts won't be happy about this one, as over on Reddit, one gamer who claims to be a Project Rene playtester has hosted their own AMA. There have been ongoing closed playtests that have let fans get in on the ground level and watch as Project Rene builds around them.
There's been a recent flurry of leaks, with someone showing off a microtransaction-stuffed title. If that wasn't enough to rattle the ever-grouchy Sims community, the Reddit AMA will only fuel the fires of rage. From mentions of 'bland' graphics to a mobile-only title, it doesn't sound like The Sims we've come to know and love.
The first question on everyone's lips is how big Project Rene will be, but sadly, our hopes of an open-world version of The Sims might've been scuppered. When someone asked the main differences between The Sims 4 and Project Rene, the OP wrote, "Same old click to move. No joystick, none of that. If u mean open world, I would say half way open world."
Another asked the tough questions, such as whether Project Rene would be a flop, leading the leaker to say, "VERY hit or miss. Graphics look decent enough for a mobile game. It should've gone console or PC instead. This would sell hard by concept." We can't imagine it NOT launching on PC, but for now, it sounds like the playtests are only on mobile.
As for connections to the main games, they said it feels more like a spin-off, explaining, "There is no real connection to the main sims. Don't expect to see Bella goth anywhere(I didn't 😭)." They also claimed there are no driveable cars (as we hoped) and that InZOI could be far superior.
If you're expecting some fancy new-gen graphics, they concluded, "It feels very bland, almost safe, comfortable, and corporate. Think like a taco with no seasoning or flavor. Think Marvel with no superhero. That type of bland, lol."
None of this sounds too positive, but bear in mind that this isn't from an official reveal, and we'll always err on the side of caution. Although the OP seemingly has proof of the playtest, it would be easy to make all of the above up. It's clear Maxis is putting a lot of hype on Project Rene, so let's hope it's worth the wait as the next evolution of The Sims name.
