It seems like only yesterday we waved goodbye to Ash Ketchum and his loyal Pikachu in the Pokemon anime, and that's because it pretty much was. Although we've moved on to the new adventures of Pokemon Horizons, Ash's legacy lives on.
Despite being told Ash will likely return to the anime one day, impatient fans have taken matters into their own hands. One Pokefan has continued Ash's story in their own animated short, and while it's not quite an official return, it's the best we've got...for now.
Pokemon fan continues Ash's adventure in animated short
The fan animation imagines Ash and Pikachu's further adventures in Paldea - the region introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. New Horizons has stepped into this region with Liko and her Sprigatito, with a host of other Gen IX 'mon coming along for the ride.
In the Ash adventure, we see him encountering new Pokemon like Klawf, Flamigo, and Armarouge, battling and adding to his Pokedex. He faces off against Scarlet and Violet gym leaders, including Brassius, Iono and Kofu - putting his new Pokemon Master skills to the test.
Everyone is (quite literally) along for the ride, as we race past an adorable Lechonk on a Cyclizar and make the most of Terastalizing. A highlight is seeing Ash snowboarding with Grusha from the Glasseado Mountain gym. Mainly, it just shows off what we're missing by not having Ash around.
The Pokemon series doesn't need Ash anymore
A fan-made trailer with a promise of "to be continued" is all well and good, but honestly, do we really need Ash? Leading the Pokemon anime for 26 years is no small feat for any TV series. Shows like The Walking Dead survived without Rick Grimes, while Grey's Anatomy recently pushed Meredith Grey to the background.
Pokemon has introduced Liko and Roy as Ash replacements, and if that wasn't enough, we have the cool Friede and Captain Pikachu. With the Rising Volt Tacklers and villainous Explorers to keep us busy, the anime has left Ash firmly in the past, which might be for the best.
It's not like Pokemon has killed Ash Ketchum off, and with new protagonists trying to win over our hearts, he's gone but not forgotten. In the meantime, we can get our Ash fix from fans imagining what he got up to next. Either way, you can bet Team Rocket is still on his tail.
