Assassins Creed Co Op

Every cloud has a silver lining, and while many are disappointed that Assassin's Creed Shadows has been pushed to 2025, the game's delay amidst controversy could apparently leave room for a cooperative mode to join the party next year.

While the idea of a Japan-set Assassin's Creed has been on our wishlist for longer than we care to remember, the beloved concept has gone down in a blaze of infamy due to complaints about its historical accuracy. At the core is the inclusion of Yasuke as a black samurai, with some going as far as branding it 'racist' to Japanese culture.

Assassin's Creed Shadows could return with co-op play

Insider Gaming claims to have the scoop on what's going on over at Ubisoft, and as damning reports of crisis swirl, the site says there could be the happy surprise of a co-op mode being introduced alongside Shadows' eventual arrival.

The co-op mode is reportedly planned post-launch and is codenamed LEAGUE. Although the main game's delay means the co-op mode doesn't have a release date, sources apparently tell the site that it's been in development since long before Shadows was postponed. This means it isn't being added specifically because of the delay.

Shadows' protagonists Yasuke and Naoe will supposedly fight side-by-side, which is sure to rattle those who seem to take issue with a female protagonist and those who have a problem with the depiction of Yasuke. While some are sure to see this as the perfect opportunity to add new protagonists, it looks like Ubisoft won't be budging.

There's a lot going on in the world of Assassin's Creed right now, and if you want to get your multiplayer fix, there's Assassin's Creed Invictus, also set to release in 2025. Given the current state of the franchise, it's unclear whether the AC roadmap will continue as planned or everything will be shunted back.

If Shadows is getting co-op, it wouldn't be the first entry in the series to get you to buddy up. 2010's Brotherhood was the first game to offer multiplayer, while the likes of Assassin's Creed Unity made co-op a major USP, and Black Flag included multiplayer but skimped out on co-op naval battles.

More recent entries have stuck to single-player, with Valhalla players hardly being fans of the shared Viking Mercenaries. To this day, Unity is the only Assassin's Creed to offer a full-blown co-op feature, and it's one that's long overdue. If co-op is as good as it could be, critics could soon be swayed.
