No matter what you think about Ubisoft, it's a shame the developer can't catch a break with Assassin's Creed Shadows. We've waited years for an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan, and now we're getting one, it seems you can't help but hack it to pieces with a samurai sword.
After lauded entries like Assassin's Creed Odyssey, it looked like the stealth series was back on top. However, after some disappointment surrounding Assassin's Creed Mirage, fans were hopeful that Shadows would be the one to bring long-time fans back. Sadly, the inclusion of Yasuke has caused plenty of controversy.
Assassin's Creed Shadows parkour gets savaged online
The decision to include Yasuke as the real-life black samurai has proved divisive. Some argue over its historical accuracy, and others have gone as far as calling Ubisoft racist. Still, the team is sticking by Yasuke and saying it took specific precautions to ensure its cultural sensitivity.
New gameplay footage is doing the rounds, and it just wouldn't be an AC game without some good ol' parkour. Unfortunately for the developer, seeing Yasuke leap from a rooftop and barrel roll has gone down about as well as you'd expect from the increasingly grouchy fandom.
We were previously warned that Shadows could revamp parkour, and while critics were already asking why you'd 'fix' something that wasn't broken, those same vocal gamers are less than impressed with Yasuke clumsily jumping into action.
Ubisoft recently showed off a different type of parkour, with female protagonist Naoe swinging across rooftops with a grappling hook. Although you loved the smooth animations of Naoe, Yasuke's moves aren't getting the same reception.
One disgruntled gamer wrote, "Looks like what platforming animations in a Shrek game would look like," while another added, "Beautiful animation, must have used at least three frames." A third concluded, "Just play Ghosts of Tsushima instead." There were many saying this looks nothing like an Assassin's Creed game.
There's a chance that Assassin's Creed Shadows can turn it around upon release, but for now, the team is fighting an uphill battle to turn the game's reputation around. Let's hope things aren't as clunky when Yasuke and Naoe make their debut on November 15.
