Ubisoft have announced the next title in the Assasin's Creed series; Valhalla. The Viking-inspired RPG already looks epic and is sure to please fans who want to hack and slash in ninth-century England.
The world premiere of the cinematic trailer dropped on April 30th. While no actual gameplay footage is included, if the game turns out even 10% as majestic as the trailer; we're golden. The strong Norse flavour is real.
Who is the new protagonist?
The player will be the celebrated warrior leader of a Viking clan named Eivor. You can also choose if you want your character to be male or female, but no news yet on whether this changes the outcome of the game
As Norse invaders, you and your army will battle with the Saxons for rights over settlement in England. Also, you might be able to tame a bear?!
Location, location, location
Assassin's Creed Valhalla is set in the year 873, in ninth-century England. Your clan decide to leave their home of Norway, and sail across the sea in those really cool longboats, to start a new chapter in England. Unfortunately, the Saxons who already settled there were pretty territorial. It's the job of you and your warriors to invade and conquer.
When it comes to your Viking village, you're the leader of this rag-tag bunch and make all the decisions when it comes to managing the settlement (isn't that always the way?)
But it's not just villagers' houses, barracks, blacksmiths and pubs you need to sort out, you'll also manage a tattoo parlour! Don't worry, romance options are also included, so you can kiss and marry your way through the available suitors.
Customisable base management is a big part of Valhalla, and Lead Producer Julien Laferrière told Eurogamer;
"It's your own Viking village you'll see prosper and grow, and which your clanmates will live in. It's at the centre of our quests and the centre of the decisions you make. We want players to see the consequences of their actions."
Leading raids against the Saxons is a massive part of expanding your clan, conquering areas and forging alliances is also part of the game.
The player will also get the opportunity to customise Viking mercenaries and share them with your friends!
Hacking and slashing
The combat in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is guaranteed to be bloody. As Creative Director Ashraf Ismail explains;
If you're going to make a Viking game, the combat needs to be visceral. It needs to be quite brutal.
Of course, the cinematic trailer may not be quite what we get in terms of gameplay when it comes to combat, but the warriors on both sides (Viking & Saxon) will be present. The warriors will be present in the big battles that take place in the game, with strengths and weaknesses to combat.
Eivor has been confirmed to have some gnarly signature combat abilities, including being able to use throwing axes and dual-wielding all combos of weapons (even two shields). And the hidden blade is back, so for those looking to execute a classic Assassin move, the blade is hidden within Eivor's gauntlet for those up close and personal killings.
