James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, has only been out for a short time following thirteen years of anticipation and delays. It was uncertain how well the second stint in Pandora would fair in cinemas so long after the release of the first, but it looks like ticket sales have gone beyond expectations. Let's get into the Avatar: The Way of Water box office figures.
Avatar: The Way Of Water Box Office Figures
Since its theatrical release on Friday, 14 December 2022, kicking off with a $434 million opening weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water has already earned over $1.1 billion worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. That not only means The Way of Water is a faster earner to the $1 billion mark compared to the original Avatar - taking just two weeks compared to the 2009 film's nineteen days - but it's also the fastest film of 2022 to reach said milestone.
Comparing the other 2022 films which have passed $1 billion worldwide, Top Gun: Maverick did so after thirty-one days, whilst Jurassic World Dominion eventually hit the benchmark after four months - making Avatar: The Way of Water's fourteen days look even more like a box office behemoth.
Whilst The Way of the Water still has a ways to go to surpass the 2009 Avatar's $2.7 billion worldwide box office total - which took months of long cinema stays and re-releases well into 2010 - the sequel already heading towards the halfway point within a fortnight, bodes well for its staying power and potential to keep earning ticket sales into its second billion.
What About the Avatar Game?
Like The Way of Water, the standalone Avatar game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, had been met with delays since its initial announcement in 2017 and eventual trailer debut at E3 2021. Now set to launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Amazon Luna, the upcoming first-person action-adventure title made by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft has no specific release date outside of the 2023-2024 range.
However, what The Way of Water's box office performance shows, is that there is still a massive appetite for the Avatar universe - even if audiences have to keep waiting to finally go back. Whether such a huge draw into the latest film will translate into large sales from the gaming equivalent of the franchise remains to be seen. What this story has taught us though, is not to underestimate James Cameron.
