With over five years in the making, Xbox Game Studios and Obsidian Entertainment have a lot at stake with Avowed.
The action RPG was once dubbed Obsidian's answer to Skyrim before a change of pace to be more intimate was made, yet the scope of what Avowed is supposed to be capable of has been made clear with such a huge comparison.
But, just six months before its release Avowed has been dealt a big blow - at least in the view of the public - as the devs reveal that 60fps isn't a "necessity" and it very well could launch at the base of 30fps.
Obsidian Art Director eludes to Avowed launching at just 30fps
Talking on the Iron Lords Podcast, Obsidian's Art Director Matt Hansen has made some rather bold claims about the performance of Avowed, especially with how many frames it will hold.
"It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames," Hansen said. "That allows us to get a lot juicier with VFX and lighting and all this other stuff."
"We are targeting 30 frames per second, bare minimum. That’s the expectation."
"It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with that. The game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal,” he continued.
Despite these limitations, IGN's recent preview has claimed that the early Avowed build is "fantastic", and the 50-minute demo at a recent event had no qualms about holding its own while providing challenging combat.
The community disagrees though, and fans have already taken up arms against this mythical title.
Avowed hopefuls take up arms following fps comments
To little surprise, hundreds of comments from hopeful fans have already poured in claiming that the game needs to up its performance to a "minimum" of 60 fps and should really be targeting 120.
One popular comment claimed that the low threshold is "a s**tty excuse to not optimize your game."
"A first-person game should be 60fps. At the bare minimum give us the option like most games today," argued a second.
A third comment compared it to Starfield, which didn't launch with 60fps and later realised that it was necessary and pushed it through in an update soon after.
Avowed is set to release in February 2025, when we'll soon see whether Obsidian favours 30 fps or doubles down on 60 for the more powerful PCs and Series X consoles.
