Batman Beyond teaser shows the Rocksteady game we’ll never see

A trailer for a mythical Batman Beyond adaptation shows what we could've had if Rocksteady Games had moved forward with plans to continue its franchise.

In some alternate reality, we're still enjoying Rocksteady's Arkham games. Sadly, we aren't. Things wound down with 2015's Arkham Knight, and after a pretty dramatic panning following its first reveal, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been pushed to 2024.

Rocksteady changed the superhero game genre forever with Arkham Asylum in 2009, and following two more beloved sequels, many feel the story was cut short. Although there was talk of a potential fourth game or Superman spin-off, Rocksteady has turned its attention to the Suicide Squad.

Batman Beyond game is too good to be true

Of all the ideas we've heard of, a Batman Beyond video game has some of the most potential. For those who don't know, Batman Beyond was a futuristic animation first released in 1999. Following an aged Bruce Wayne mentoring a young upstart called Terry McGinnis as the next Batman, it was a dark but beloved cartoon of the '00s.

Although YouTuber James Luke has created the concept trailer for a live-action Batman Beyond, we can't help but think about what could've been if Rocksteady had moved forward with a Batman Beyond video game. The 33-second teaser is created in Unreal Engine 5, showing how far the gaming world has come.

We see McGinnis standing on a rooftop, with a neon Gotham City in the background. The red lights of the Batmobile come into view, and then an aged Bruce Wayne says, "Go to work," to his young apprentice. It looks like a cutscene from a Rocksteady game, set just before Bruce would swoop down onto Gotham.

Is there a Batman Beyond game?

Batman Beyond Justice League

In 2021, concept art from an apparent Batman Beyond game appeared online. Concept Artist Goran Bukvic claimed that it was from a cancelled project but didn't elaborate, leaving many to think Rocksteady was cooking up a Batman Beyond outing at one point.

It's never been confirmed, and instead, there have been continued rumours of a title called Arkham Insurgency - featuring the Court of Owls and Bruce Wayne's son, Damien Wayne. We've seen Batman Beyond suits in Arkham City and Arkham Knight, so it's not like Rocksteady wasn't aware of this world.

We've had a few forays into the Batman Beyond world with the likes of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker game, but just imagine if Rocksteady got its hands on the IP. Following the disappointment of WB Montreal's Gotham Knights and the jury being out on Kill the Justice League, maybe someone will do Batman Beyond justice one day.
