Gamers are sitting, twiddling their thumbs and waiting for the bombs to drop again. After the runaway success of Amazon's live-action Fallout, the franchise looked like it was back with a bang. Sadly, Fallout 76's Skyline Valley update isn't enough to sustain the series for many.
Much like we've been left in limbo waiting for the likes of The Sims 5 after the release of The Sims 4, Fallout 5 is in the same boat. It's been nine years since Fallout 4 release, and while there's been plenty of talk about the inevitable Fallout 5, Bethesda's Todd Howard has warned us not to expect it for a long time.
Todd Howard gives disappointing Fallout 5 update
In a lengthy one-hour interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, the Bethesda boss revealed all about The Elder Scrolls, Starfield, and Fallout. The apocalyptic adventure is one of the studio's big tentpole franchises, and while we've been warned that Fallout 5 will be coming at some point after The Elder Scrolls 6, that point just got even further away.
Discussing future Fallout games, Howard said, "Obviously, I can't talk about those right now, but I would say sort of rushing through them, or we need to get stuff out that is different than the work we're doing in 76, you know, we don't feel like we need to rush any of that."
Howard added that right now, the Fallout TV series "fills a certain niche in terms of the franchise and story-telling," which fits with previous musings that it's 'almost' Fallout 5. He concluded, "I totally get the desire for a new kind of ‘mainline’ single-player game, but those things take time.
"I don't think it’s bad for people to miss things, as well. We just want to get it right and make sure that everything we’re doing in a franchise, whether it’s Elder Scrolls or Fallout or now Starfield, that those become meaningful moments for everybody who loves these franchises as much as we do."
There are already plans for Fallout 5
It's admittedly frustrating that Howard knows how much we want Fallout 5 but is keeping us hanging. Like with the Grand Theft Auto series, it seems the gap between games is going to get increasingly long - we can't wait to play Fallout 6 in 2080.
Still, at least we know there are plans for Fallout 5, with Howard discussing the TV series with Den of Geek and explaining, "There were some things where I said, 'Don’t do this because we are going to do that in Fallout 5.' It wasn’t the translation of an existing story. It was, what would the next thing be? It just happens to be a TV show."
We know Fallout Season 2 is on the way, and while it's not quite the same as playing the game, here's hoping that it can sow the seeds for Fallout 5's eventual release.
