Putting Kratos in Black Myth: Wukong shows exactly why the next God of War game needs to tackle Chinese mythology.

Black Myth Wukong Kratos Mod

When it comes to Sony's catalogue of acclaimed first-party games, Santa Monica Studios' God of War is up there with other greats like The Last of Us and Bloodborne. While there's no official word on where Kratos is going next, we know whatever comes after 2022's God of War: Ragnarok won't be a full-blown sequel.

Despite the success of the original God of War trilogy in Ancient Greece, God of War (2018) Game Director Cory Barlog confirmed there won't be a Norse trilogy. There's no way the Ghost of Sparta's story is ending here, and with Atreus now by his side, fans have thrown up plenty of potential ideas for where they should go next.

In a very different world (quite literally), Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong has given us its own mythological adventure. While there are elements of Elden Ring thrown into this not-quite-Soulslike, it's clear to see how parts of it might've been inspired by the God of War games.

Black Myth: Wukong mod proves we need a Chinese mythology God of War

Over on Nexus Mods, someone has done the work for us - swapping Sun Wukong's character model for Kratos. It's obviously just a visual change, but it has us thinking about what a Chinese-set God of War could look like.

Seeing Kratos twirl weapons around this lush backdrop is a far cry from the snowier climes we're used to from 2018's soft reboot and Ragnarok, but it has us imagining what a modern remake of the earlier games would look like. For all its faults, Black Myth: Wukong is a visually stunning game.

This is far from the only mod that you're having fun with. From Star Wars' Darth Maul giving us shades of Respawn's Jedi games to playing as Dragon Ball's Goku, modders are doing it all. Before you ask, yes, ToastedShoes has already put The Lion King's Rafiki in there. Sadly, we can't find a Shrek mod...yet.

Here at GGRecon, we're among those who championed a move into Chinese mythology for Kratos' eventual return. A mural of Tyr's travels in Ragnarok confirmed that multiple mythologies exist in this world, and while there was a tease of a Japanese Shinto symbol, the fact that other deities have been acknowledged over the years means Chinese mythology isn't out of reach.

Others want the next God of War to take a leaf out of Black Myth: Wukong's book in a different way, taking away some of the linear elements and taking a more Soulslike approach where you can attack bosses while vastly underpowered. With Black Myth: Wukong's sales looking positive for plans of an expanded universe, we could potentially even see Kratos and Sun Wukong cross paths in a game of their own.
