Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong is everywhere right now. Well, almost everywhere. After launching on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 20, the game has quickly soared to the top of Steam and reportedly caused a boom in PS5 sales in China. Sadly, not everyone is able to play.

You might've noticed that Black Myth: Wukong is missing out on a pretty major platform, with Xbox players being locked out in the cold. Microsoft has typically struggled to find its footing in China, and while the Xbox could make a big splash with major releases like Wukong, there are swirling rumours it might not happen.

Black Myth: Wukong's Xbox release could be in doubt

Forbes' Paul Tassi notes that Black Myth: Wukong is struggling to lock in an Xbox release, seemingly thanks to optimisation issues. You'll remember that Larian Studios held back Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox due to the mandate that games have to run on both the entry-level Xbox Series S and the beefier Series X.

Baldur's Gate 3 couldn't run split-screen co-op on the Series S, meaning fans had to wait four months compared to their PC pals and three months compared to PlayStation. Black Myth: Wukong is reportedly facing a different problem thanks to an unknown 'tech issue', although it's not known if it's related to the Series S.

Worryingly, a Microsoft spokesperson responded to Tassi's request for comment with the same generic response he'd been given months earlier. It reads as follows and contains no new information: "We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms.

"We can't comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that." There is some good news for the Green Team, as Forbes quashes rumours that Sony has stumped up for a year of PlayStation exclusivity.

Still, the fact that PC dominates in China leads Tassi to suggest that getting Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox could be a low-priority release. As there's not even a rough release window, Xbox players are left scrambling for news and waiting for confirmation that they'll (eventually) be able to play one of 2024's biggest games.
