It's hard to remember a time when zombies weren't a big deal in video games, and while 1984's Zombie Zombie on the ZX Spectrum gets the honour of being the 'first' zombie video game, the genre was really kickstarted by Resident Evil

These days, we've got zombies in everything from The Last of Us to Left 4 Dead, Dying Light to Telltale's The Walking Dead. We've also seen those brain-hungry munchers pop up in other forms, with Treyarch's Call of Duty games becoming synonymous with its beloved Zombies mode.

Black Ops 6 Zombies could be nabbing a beloved Resident Evil feature

Treyarch first gave us Zombies as part of 2008's World at War, with the mode becoming a staple of its Black Ops series. With Black Ops 6 rising from the grave in 2024, Zombies is expected to be one of the game's big draws - especially given how Modern Warfare 3 didn't actually feed us with flesh.

We've already been promised big things from Black Ops 6's Zombies offering, and from our first gameplay tease of the new Terminus map, it's clear there's more than just a focus on round-based Zombies to enjoy. According to YouTuber MrDalekJD, Zombies will have a new 'game over' outro animation feature.

Similar to when Chris Valentine or Jill Redfield has their throat ripped out in 1996's Resident Evil, MrDalekJD claims that we'll witness a death animation when killed in Black Ops 6 Zombies. As well as outro cutscenes for the main Easter egg, we're told, "Treyarch also added game over outros."

Apparently, "Whenever you die out fully, there will be a small in-game cutscene that plays. It shows a small cut scene of the zombie basically tearing away at the body of your player, which is hilarious." CoD has never been for kids, but by dialling up the gore, BO6 Zombies could really be earning its rating.

The Resident Evil games have a lot of fun with their death animations, most recently seen in 2023's RE4 remake. MrDalekJD's video goes into more detail about returning features like GobbleGums, weapon customisation, and mode-specific systems, also outlining the new Augment upgrade system and enemies including Vermin and Parasites.

It seems that Treyarch has finally learned that some of us come to CoD just for Zombies, and after having spent many hours grinding away at rounds of the undead since World at War, Black Ops 6 feels like a love letter to the mode and the wider zombie game genre. Still, we'll be trying not to trigger those Resi-inspired outros.
