We sometimes wonder whether Hidetaka Miyazaki realises he's sat on a potential goldmine, with Bloodborne players once again asking where the long-rumoured remake or sequel is. It's been nearly a decade since we first visited the creepy confines of Yharnam, and still, our love of Bloodborne shows no sign of slowing.
FromSoftware has delivered some epic games over the years, but while we've had three Dark Souls games and six (yes, six) Armored Core outings, Bloodborne remains one and done. It's true that the essence of Bloodborne's gothic horror can be felt in Elden Ring, but for many, it's not enough.
Bloodborne gets a massive boost thanks to Elden Ring
According to TrueTrophies, Bloodborne's player count has soared since Elden Ring released its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Looking at insights from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts, Bloodborne has reportedly seen Bloodborne's PS5 and PS4 player count leap by 57.77% in June.
Given that this is when Shadow of the Erdtree was released, it seems "Soulsborne fever" has well and truly gripped us. In the immediate aftermath of Shadow of the Erdtree's release, Bloodborne had 11.61% more players and became the 65th-most played PlayStation game of the week.
Interestingly, Bloodborne has seen a boost in players, leaving the likes of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice where they are. The site claims that Dark Souls III was the only other FromSoftware game to enjoy a boost, getting a smaller 5.9% player count bump in the week following Shadow of the Erdtree.
There has been plenty of talk about a return to the game in some form, with someone on X writing, "Hope to see someday a sequel/remaster/remake, something bloodborne related, Sony has gold waiting to be made." Another added, "I actually need a Bloodborne remake or sequel so bad, it's not even funny."
Someone else noted, "You know, it's funny how... folk keep asking if there'll be a modern port of Bloodborne or, more futilely, a sequel... And meanwhile, you look at both video games and TTRPGs, there is a cottage industry of games specifically designed to emulate Bloodborne's vibe."
Sadly, we've been baited far too many times before. Every Sony State of Play leads to Bloodborne trending online, while Miyazaki himself has said he wants more people to play it. It seems the closest we're getting is Elden Ring's Graceborne overhaul, but with 2025 marking its 10th anniversary, we'll still hold a candle to the idea of a Bloodborne sequel... someday.
