It started out so well for Blue Box Games' Abandoned - giving us a viral marketing campaign that even the Cloverfield movies would be proud of. Sadly, what looked like could be the next big horror title has since slipped into the depths of development hell amidst rumours it's everything from a Silent Hill reboot to Metal Gear revival. None of that is true.

If you haven't heard of Abandoned, we don't blame you. The mysterious PlayStation exclusive was supposed to launch last year via an app, but as that date came and went, things went quiet. Even though the survival horror is back in the limelight months later, it's because there are worrying claims Blue Box has "abandoned" Abandoned

What's Going On With Abandoned?

We'll admit that even we'd forgotten about Abandoned, which is why the recent update had us confused and hopeful in equal measure. However, instead of giving an apology and an update that Abandoned is getting a surprise drop, Blue Box seemingly put the nail in the coffin when it deleted nearly all tweets relating to the game. The Twitterverse quickly picked up on this and professed the end of Abandoned.

As it turns out, we were wrong to put it in the grave just yet. Blue Box has since clarified what's going on. In a rare turn of good fortune, Abandoned isn't dead at all. That being said, it sounds like it's walking with a limp. Blue Box has now responded with the following statement: "Recently we have been bombarded with requests and questions regarding the development status for Abandoned. In regards to the latest rumors regarding Abandoned being canceled. Our response to this is that these rumors are false."

That's all well and good, but there's no official word on why the developer would go back and quietly delete a load of tweets about what's supposed to be a major title. The general consensus is that Blue Box has gone back and deleted negative tweets where it's been called out for disappointing updates. Sadly, this damage control has spectacularly backfired on the developer.

When Will We See Abandoned?

There is some good news, with Blue Box promising Abandoned is still on the way. The issues apparently come from the fact that the developer has had to delay the app and game's prologue (again). When the app went live in August, there was barely anything there, with Blue Box head Hasan Kahraman admitting it was a "big disaster." Back then, he'd promised a new trailer "soon," and yet, here we are. So, while we know Abandoned IS coming, we also know it's been delayed indefinitely.

Among all of this, there are STILL those that hold out hope it's a secret Silent Hill game. Come on everyone... give it up. Only recently, Konami was slammed for letting the Silent Hill domain expire, which led to someone else buying it and replacing the homepage with a tweet from Pyramid Head's creator, saying he hates his own monster. The quiet developer then renewed a trademark for Silent Hill but was again lambasted over the idea it'll be another pachinko machine. Abandoned and Silent Hill do have one thing in common though. They're both doing nothing right now.
