Apex Legends has been in freefall for far too long. Overcomplicated loot systems, stagnant metas and "boring ass characters", alongside a wealth of bugs and hacks have left the battle royale at its lowest point in three years. Well, that was prior to Season 22.
Maybe it's the death of the battle royale genre (Fortnite has diversified from BR and Warzone isn't strong either), but Apex Legends has faced internal problems, leaving Respawn Entertainment in quite a polarising position.
However, Season 22 proved promising with a new map and modes, and it appears that Bot Royale was everything Apex Legends needed to get back on track.
Apex Legends' new Bot Royale is injecting life into a tired BR
As Apex Legends tumbles on towards its sixth anniversary, the battle royale title has seen the average player become significantly better than they used to be - a curve all too familiar within live-service shooters - leaving new and returning players demotivated when they load up.
This is where Bot Royale comes into play, giving players a chance to get to grips with the game amid aim assist nerfs.
"Last night I saw 'Bot Royale' I gave it a shot and I enjoyed the hell out of it," said one player on Reddit. "No try hards except myself playing as well as I can and winning. I also realized it can help me improve using other legends and different weapons."
With the post heading upwards of 1,000 upvotes, another player agreed, adding, "It’s what apex lacks the most… one single mode where you can get better without getting infuriated."
Apex Legends player count bounces back in Season 22
After a worrying few months, the peak player count appears to be breathing in an air of positivity. The player count has increased by 20% in the last 30 days, getting back up over the 300,000 mark (on Steam).
While it's not quite the 400,000+ that Apex Legends was getting this time last year, it's a spike in the right direction. The new map, District, will undoubtedly also increase the player count, and new content appears to be Respawn Entertainment's recipe for success.
