Bungie outlines huge Destiny 2 armour changes and fans are torn

Destiny 2 is changing armour (again), and fans aren't sure how to feel.

Destiny has been around for 10 years now, and it's constantly evolved in that time. 2017 saw the launch of Destiny 2, and we've got new subclasses, abilities, and weapons. Bungie has grafted on entire systems, from the excellent finishers to surprises like fishing.

It's a game continually growing, and with Codename Frontiers now being confirmed as two medium-sized expansions a year, Bungie is looking to mix things up a little with a "Next Generation Armor" shakeup.

Destiny 2 armour is changing again

Destiny 2's armour has shifted to allow for mods and more buildcrafting opportunities over the years, and Bungie revealed via its Episode Revenant pre-launch stream that it'll be doing it again next year.

While the changes won't be implemented in next week's second Episode, Bungie's deeper dive via a blog post confirms that "Stats will be reworked to be more impactful, less confusing, and less constraining," while the team will introduce set bonuses.

Bungie says armour has stagnated since Shadowkeep's arrival in 2019 (the last time it was shaken up), and the team is working to change the way stats work on each piece.

Stats effects will no longer be tiered, and they'll be capped at 200, with anything after 101 offering an additional powerful effect. Legendary Armor will have stat archetypes, like the 'Brawler' one in the mockup below.

"The result will be a smaller number of unique stats on any piece of armor," Bungie says, "with larger contributions to these stats, and every stat point providing a benefit."

"These changes should ultimately make every piece of armor more interesting and easier to evaluate." Bungie's blog post goes deeper on how stats will lend themselves to new build options, but players aren't ready to warm to it just yet.

Players aren't sure about Destiny 2's armour changes

"Something about this feels like we've done a full circle now: We made the switch to Armor 2.0 because of grinding for perks and stats, right? And Armor 2.0 mostly reduced it to stats.

"And now after years of investment on armor mod updates and changes, we are.....putting "stat archetypes" and "set bonuses" on armor. Isn't that just perks/mods with extra steps?" one commenter on Reddit asked.

Others are most concerned that Destiny's already thin vault space won't be enough for the influx of armour with varying stats, while others compared it to the simplicity of Destiny 1.
Some Guardians are more impressed, noting it's not dissimilar to the system used in Division 2, while another suggests the current state of Destiny is holding back excitement.

"It seems as if everybody acknowledges that it is a great and necessary change, but we’re all too exhausted and uninterested in actually participating in it because it feels like we’re all just… done," they said.

"It’s like we should have had this earlier when we were more interested in playing, but ever since the saga ended we’re just kind of over everything."

"We want new and exciting things, but we completed the decade-long journey. With little indication of what’s next, next to no hype for anything more, and Bungie’s depressing state of affairs - we’re kind of over Destiny as it is."

With Destiny 3 rumours being shut down, we may have a long time to wait for that.
