The upcoming (and rejigged) 2023 title in the Call of Duty franchise is set to stay in the Modern Warfare universe, but according to sources, it won't be a trilogy game.
It's become well known that Activision's original plan to have a one-year hiatus on annual releases has been scrapped, presumably following the launch success of Modern Warfare 2.
Following rumours that Activision will plug this void by quickly pulling together the next storyline in Infinity Ward's series, it appears that this premium release faces all sorts of canonical problems. Instead of being a direct continuation of the Modern Warfare story, it sounds like a spin-off.
Call of Duty 2023 will NOT be Modern Warfare 3
The arrival of Dome into the latest season of MW2 action has undoubtedly upped the appetite for a Modern Warfare 3 title featuring some of the old maps and weapons. However, fans are expected to have their nostalgia thirst unquenched.
Instead, Bloomberg has now claimed that Call of Duty 2023 will be an "extension" of Modern Warfare 2, which Advanced Warfare's Sledgehammer Games will develop instead of Infinity Ward. the question is, will there be jetpacks?
"Activision's goal is for the new Call of Duty to feel like a standalone, full-price release and also an extension of Modern Warfare II, said people familiar with the project," read the Bloomberg reports.
"The current plan is for the game to carry over maps and modes from last year’s shooter," added journalist Jason Schreier. It will not round off the trilogy in the rebooted Modern Warfare series, but will instead expand on what was supposed to be a second-year DLC for the current MW2 title.
Modern Warfare series will continue in Call of Duty 2023
Despite a proper trilogy being debunked - or maybe just saved for Infinity Ward's next turn to lead a Call of Duty game (in 2025) - Sledgehammer Games' new title will continue on the current storyline.
Plugging a gap that was left by Treyarch wanting more time to develop its Gulf War game, Call of Duty 2023 will now build on the planned DLC that was expected to contain another MW2 single-player campaign, more multiplayer maps, and recycled old-school CoD content.
If we believe all of the above, it means players might not need to demand refunds on skins after all. We're fully expecting content to filter between the two games, much like it does on each yearly iteration of Warzone.
