When it comes to gaming characters, a lot goes into making icons. Some characters are built on reputation (think Mario and Pikachu), sex sells for others (Stellar Blade leaned into that hard), while animated games like Street Fighter and VALORANT are applauded for their appropriate representation of different ethnicities.

It's safe to say that iconic characters can be born out of a wealth of ideas. But for Call of Duty, its method to the madness this year seems to be ditching the roster of beloved faces - like Captian Price - in favour of feline creatures and ugly-cute beasties.

Modern Warfare 3's latest skins include cats, slugs, and fish

Modern Warfare 3 already has a massive range of critters walking among soldiers. Pigeons, cats, rats, dogs, bunnies, wolves, gorillas, rhinos, ducks, and more are all darting around with guns in hand. Like an acid-dipped Zootopia mod, it's quackers over there.

Now, even more furries and slimies are arriving, as Season 5 Reloaded has revealed fish, cats, and slug skins will be joining alongside the unofficial Transformers Operator, a golden morph suit, The Crow, and haunting emojis.

The new animals will also have a game mode dedicated to them, named "Fishfection", which sees teams of cats armed with the new Spear and Torque 35 Combat Bow take on helpless fish. As the name suggests, it's basically Infection, but players will sport these skins for free in the mode.

Call of Duty fans plead for 'back to basics' ethos

Following the new skins being revealed, players have taken to social media to plead for a change in hopes of seeing the military shooter that Call of Duty is supposed to be.

"They need to bring Call of Duty back to basics. What is this?" said one popular comment on X. Another added, "COD games lost their souls. Zero effort is put into the skins and content to maintain at least somewhat of an atmosphere related to the title and universe of the game."

A third fan added, "Makes me miss H2M even more," referencing the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer mod that was shut down by Activision last week. Players frequently claim they want more mil-sim skins, but it's clear that Activision sees a market for these wacky costumes...
