Call of Duty fans convinced DMZ is being axed for MW3

After a year in the Call of Duty series, it looks like DMZ mode is being axed for 2023's Modern Warfare 3 and could be replaced by Zombies.

As Modern Warfare 2 was launched, the Tarkov-inspired DMZ game mode was set to be quite a hit, offering a new and different extraction stylistic compared to the tedious arcade shooter simulation.

But it didn't quite capture the essence of what an extraction game should be, and instead, turned into a brawl to gatekeep players from being able to complete their faction quests. The team couldn't stop players treating it like a full-blown battle royale.

Despite Infinity Ward's best efforts to try and tone down the bloodshed, it appears that DMZ has been put to one side and won't be coming back for Modern Warfare 3.

DMZ is featured nowhere in Modern Warfare 3 marketing

With more and more promotional campaigns being deployed from Sledgehammer Games ahead of the Modern Warfare 3 reveal, information has emerged about the multiplayer features. These include weapon crossovers and the MW2 2009 map pool being added in full.

However, we're yet to see a single slither of information about DMZ. So far, all the promotional adverts have been based around multiplayer and Zombies, and even Battle Pass leaks didn't refer to DMZ being a thing any more. With this, players suspect that DMZ will be sunsetted in favour of Zombies and Outbreak.

Call of Duty fans expect DMZ to be cancelled for MW3

Although DMZ was being hyped as a game mode that ran in tandem with Warzone for the foreseeable future, Call of Duty fans are preparing for the mode to be discontinued for Modern Warfare 3 - although the new CoD HQ hub would allow it to live on inside Modern Warfare 2.

"Rather they get rid of this and put more effort into MP. Hope they don’t get rid of the Raid episodes though," said one fan. "They’ve taken the L and realised that they can’t make an extraction shooter that comes close to competing with Escape from Tarkov," added another.

Others have speculated that Outbreak Zombies and DMZ could be tied in together, which could either be the best of both worlds or a failure of two modes.
