Regardless of what you think of its quality going forward, Call of Duty has been an absolute titan of the gaming industry year after year for some time now. The shooter franchise is undoubtedly a big deal, rocketing to unbelievable heights with Modern Warfare... and seemingly refusing to step down from there.

Even though Vanguard was something of a financial disappointment for Activision Blizzard, it was still the United Kingdom's biggest-selling game of the entire year - which stands as a testament to the sheer scale of the series. But a new contender has entered the ring.

Will Elden Ring Be The Best-Selling Game Of 2022?

Call Of Duty Finally Set To Be Dethroned As Best-Selling Game Of The Year

It looks like The Lands Between were much too alluring to be ignored. In a surprising turn, it looks like Call of Duty could actually be dethroned as the best-selling game of the year by FromSoftware's new fantasy giant.

The upcoming Modern Warfare 2 is expected to fall under Elden Ring this year, for the franchise's first miss for the top spot since 2018. Around the globe, Call of Duty has topped the charts year after year. Even before 2018, any CoD game has flown high as being part of the best-selling franchise for 14 years in a row.

This new report comes from the NPD Group, which expects Elden Ring to smuggle the top spot from the new Call of Duty. Elsewhere, it's expected that God of War Ragnarok, Gotham Knights, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will also be making the top ten.

Is Call Of Duty In Trouble In 2022?

The Call of Duty series now has such high standards, not being the top dog of the year is a very serious loss for Activision Blizzard. Especially as Modern Warfare 2 is hoping to recoup the losses of Vanguard and kick off a "new era of Call of Duty" too when the CoDverse lost 50 million players overnight. If this comes to be true, it could mean internal faith in the shooter series could diminish.

It could be interesting to see what happens here, but honestly, it's nice to see an outlier challenge the titan that is Call of Duty. Elden Ring has already been dubbed one of the best games of all time, so there's a sense of justice that it could topple what's likely to be "just" another Call of Duty game - no offence MW2. The video game sales hierarchy has changed and we're here for it.
