The iconic Call of Duty franchise has always been deep-rooted into the console gaming world, but despite its Xbox-heavy background, the ever-growing audience on PC is certainly being noticed by the developers. Ever since the 2003 iteration of Call of Duty was released, the PC community has been slowly gaining traction, and much to the thanks of Warzone, in the recent generation PC is just as popular.
Even the professional scene has now been swapped over to play on PC, and aside from the occasional hacker problem that is now being dealt with by Ricochet (somewhat), it's proving to be quite the optimal platform.
Now, the popularity contest could soon swing in favour of PC even more, aside from the clear advantages of using the platform, as the franchise could be about to head back to Steam and capitalise on its huge player count.
Leaks Suggest Modern Warfare 2 Will Be On Steam
Activision, and soon to be Microsoft, may have lost a colossal 50 million players this year, in comparison to that of last year's heightened pandemic player count, but they're hardly sweating. Instead, a new leak has surfaced that suggests that the franchise is heading back to Steam, having previously been exclusive to Activision's Battle.net.
Following the Modern Warfare 2 trailer and release date reveal, the artwork has appeared on Steam. A simple picture of the protagonist Ghost - the same used in the reveal - has been added to the Call of Duty section of Steam, indicating that Modern Warfare 2, at least, will be coming to the PC store.
It would come as the first time that a Call of Duty game has landed on Steam since Sledgehammer Games' World War II title back in 2017.
Is Warzone 2 Coming To Steam?
The future of Warzone 2 continues to be up in the air, as the sequel to Call of Duty's battle royale will attempt to right the wrongs of Caldera. Many people are expecting that Microsoft exclusivity is coming into play at some point, and Sony is not going to pass up on their current bonuses for PlayStation, the struggle for Warzone 2's rights has only just begun.
However, if Warzone 2 is supposed to be in tandem with Modern Warfare 2 and the DMZ game mode, it's likely that we will see the battle royale follow suit, and possibly the future instalments of Call of Duty.
While Modern Warfare 2 will be the main Call of Duty for two years, Activision is still looking to release at least one game in 2023, which will give us a better indication as to whether Steam will permanently house Call of Duty again, or whether this year (if confirmed) will be a one-off.
