Call of Duty halts hard drive monopoly by shrinking MW3

Call of Duty is finally letting you play other games as it drastically shrinks Modern Warfare 3 and shaved over 100 GB off its install size.

Call of Duty HQ has become renowned for its colossal size as it houses multiple games in the series such as Warzone, Modern Warfare 3, and its preceding MW2.

The notorious app has often left players locked into nothing but Call of Duty on their consoles as hard drives have been swallowed whole. But this is finally changing (at least for a while) thanks to Modern Warfare 3 having its file size drastically shrunk.

Modern Warfare 3 set to half in file size

As revealed by PlayStation, Call of Duty's file size is being slashed, especially on current-gen consoles like the PS5.

Sony revealed that the PlayStation 5 file size will be dropped by over 100 GB (down from 174 GB to 73 GB), while last-gen consoles will be reduced by around 20% (from 82 GB to 67 GB).

There will be a "huge" update for Modern Warfare 3, which hopefully allows this memory revival to happen. Still, it will be worthwhile if you're still staying loyal to MW3 or Warzone.

It's likely that similar dealings will be coming for Xbox and PC users, although there's currently little information on those reductions. Despite this "huge" update is also undated, PlayStation said it would be happening "soon".

For now, you might actually be able to download a few more games to your consoles, with a wealth of shooter titles out there begging to be explored.

Unfortunately, this might just be a summer fling, though, as Black Ops 6's Beta beckons. It's destined to have a chunky file size itself, with the full game following shortly after this fall. At least those summer romances are some of the better memories in life.
