The next era of Call of Duty is set to push the boat out, with Black Ops 6 taking on an open-world Campaign that we've never seen before.

The Black Ops team, including Frank Woods and Russell Adler, have all featured in promotions over the last two weeks, leading up to the Worldwide reveal on Sunday, June 9.

But, within some in-game promotions, players have found references to 9/11. It comes as the latest in-game challenge before the Black Ops 6 reveal have highlighted the date in red.

Black Ops 6's latest promotion contains a 9/11 reference

The Black Ops 6 campaign is set during the Gulf War, and as world leaders such as Saddam Hussein and President Bill Clinton have both featured in early trailers, it looks like the conflicts will once again be heavily centred around the USA.

Now, in the latest promotional campaign, which has led players on a scavenger hunt in Warzone to uncock Calling Cards and Emblems, the developers have added a submarine to Rebirth Island. It contains a number of Black Ops references and "evidence" against "the mole."

But in the submarine, players have found a screen containing a range of numbers and coded letters. Most of the digits are in white, but one set of numbers is outlined in red: "911".

This isn't the first time that Black Ops 6 art has made reference to the September 11 attacks either, but the first time that the promo campaign has made an in-game nod to it. It's almost akin to how No Russian was used last year.

There are a number of other explanations that could be viable. The Mustang and Sally have featured quite prominently in the Black Ops promotions, and the latter pistol is even the codeword to the Warzone bunker which starts this in-game challenge off. The Sally is the pack-a-punched version of the M1911.

Given the timeline, some players remain convinced that the Black Ops campaign will have a mention of 9/11. Ideas range from a full mission, a retaliation mission, or just as background lore. Yet again, it could all be nothing, and as Call of Duty has pioneered this last month, "The Truth Lies."

Black Ops 6's lid will finally be lifted on June 9 following the Xbox showcase, where we will likely get some answers about what is in store for the campaign this year.
