Call of Duty Zombies can be pretty gory and frightening, but for the most part, the franchise is relatively toned down in just how scary it wants to take this fight against the undead.

In fact, most of the Zombies content so far might have started out with a bit of a horror edge on the first and second map run-throughs, but anything after that becomes a simulation, where Zombies lose their terrifying edge and simply become flesh-made target practice.

But, what if we turned off the lights and made Call of Duty Zombies into a pitch-black horror game?

Die Rise is one of the more entertaining maps in Call of Duty history, with the Sliquifier wonder weapon making the entire map a slip-and-slide.

Now, one modder has turned it into a Resident Evil-esque horror game by removing all of the lighting except for a torch. Pulses are sure to race as you use your AN-94 to combat the reanimated corpses while avoiding jump scares at every turn.

Redditor Braedog12 is the owner of the mod and said, "It has global illumination to get proper colour shading, shadows, and dark areas. The rooftops are generally brighter while the corridors below are dark and creepy, so you need to utilize your flashlight that I added which you can toggle on and off."

The Resident Evil-like torch gameplay makes the map incredibly freaky, especially with Die Rise's elevators, where the zombies can sprout out from beneath your feet in an instant and really scare the life out of you. "You have to rely on your senses and the characters’ clever voice lines like when you’re low on ammo or points," the modder said.

Better yet, the modder doesn't want to stop there. They are already testing other maps with similar mods, where Black Ops 2's popular catalogue will likely come in handy, such as Five and Kino Der Toten. The mod isn't public yet, but Braedog hopes they can sort through the files soon enough for players to share in the horrifying fun.
