It looks like Treyarch is pulling out all of the stops in 2024, with Black Ops 6 tipped to be the biggest and best Call of Duty yet. Then again, aren't we told that every year? For once, though, the various trailers and gameplay teases suggest that all the hype might be worth it.
Giving a bit of that classic CoD charm mixed with something new, we're poised to enjoy another engaging Black Ops story for Woods and Co., with some Zombies thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, Black Ops 6 fans are worried that a series staple has been cast to the side.
Call of Duty players are worried for Nuketown
August 28's Call of Duty: NEXT revealed a tonne, including confirmation of a third Zombies map in 2024, the return of Prestige progression, Verdansk returning to Warzone for its fifth anniversary, multiplayer maps, and more. Speaking of maps, many are wondering where Nuketown is.
Having been part of the CoD DNA since it first popped up in 2010's Black Ops, we've seen various takes on this '50s-inspired nuclear testing ground. Still, the name Nuketown has become synonymous with Black Ops outings.
Fans were shocked to learn that Nuketown won't be part of the 16 multiplayer maps at launch. Alongside newcomers like Derelict and Rewind, we're getting Sandhouse - which appears to be an apocalyptic version of Nuketown. We're not sure why it wasn't called 'Nukedtown', but hey, we don't work for Treyarch.
The reveal hasn't gone down well with CoD purists, who are now concerned the close-quarters combat of Nuketown will be (literally) buried under the sand. Responding to the news, one disgruntled fan simply wrote, "They better have a normal version of Nuketown wtf is this."
Another raged, "Garbage. Where is the real Nuketown?" and a third said, "What the f**k?! Give me regular ass Nuketown or I’m rioting 😂." Others were sold on the idea, with one supporter cheering, "That’s actually a cool concept considering how many Nuketown variations they had."
There's still hope for Nuketown
At this point, we'd like to point out that you should probably cool your jets because Nuketown is far from 'dead'. The new Area 99 Warzone map confirmed that Nuketown isn't just one version but is effectively made in a factory (like its mannequins), which explains why we've had versions in 2025 and 2070.
Just because Sandhouse is a nuked Nuketown, the OG is likely safe and sound somewhere. Also, note that the June Black Ops 6 Direct confirmed classic Nuketown (timestamped above) is coming. As many in the replies have guessed, Sandhouse is likely a Nuketown variant coming at launch, leaving the classic version to release as part of the game's seasonal content.
Nuketown has become as much part of a Black Ops game as Zombies, and with Treyarch already boasting the biggest Zombies map of all time, could we be treated to two Nuketowns with this year's CoD? The developer knows our love of the beloved bomb site, so don't worry, Nuketown's nuking is only temporary.
