Amidst the digital noise of social media, several Call of Duty (CoD) enthusiasts have raised their virtual flags in distress. Their argument? The new Call of Duty titles have lost the unique essence that made them stand out in the first place.

They argue that these new CoD titles including Warzone have embraced a tedious grind and influencer culture, all to milk as much revenue as possible.

Churns of the grind

The sentiment is epitomized by a particularly exasperated post by redditor u/Fr0zenIc3. They lament, "Warzone really ruined Call of Duty... It feels like an endless grind, and I especially hate the new prestige system, it's garbage."

The continuity and interconnected nature of the game's progression system across titles have left some players yearning for the days when each release felt distinct.

In their opinion, previous CoD iterations brought a fresh perspective, as development studios infused their unique flavour. But now? "Now ***ing MW19, Vanguard, MWII, and MWIII will all play the same," u/Fr0zenIc3 wrote.

Another redditor, u/poorkid_5, chipped in, "everything else is geared towards appeasing the sweaty wanna-be influencer streamer culture. On top of cosmetics and mtx. It’s killing a lot of things other than CoD."

Nostalgia for a time long gone

Many fans long for a return to the franchise's golden era. Nostalgically, u/soapbark reminisced, "The most competitive versions of this game came during a time where the developer was not integrated in the online experience. They made a product, and the community built around it.

Echoing this sentiment, u/Fr0zenIc3 pointedly mentioned, "A new COD release was always a fresh start on a completely different game, using the studios own spin on gameplay, on a title that had nothing to do with the last."

Not everyone hates it

Yet, as always, there's another side to the digital coin. Not everyone's singing the blues.

In a reply to the initial complaint, u/_Admiral_ weighed in: "My thoughts are that no matter how the game is, this sub will be filled with people complaining and that it's not an indication of normal COD players. Just a vocal whining minority on the internet as usual."

Standing firm against the tide, u/ShoulderBest champions the current Gunsmith system: "I love everything about it... The gunsmith has so much potential to be awesome and I think that having too many options is thousands of times better than having too few options.

They hint at a point that's often brushed under the carpet – that as games evolve, not every change will be unanimously loved, but sometimes, change is exactly what a series needs.

And so, as the debate rages on, one wonders – is it time for the developers to rethink their strategy, or is this merely the sound of a vocal minority? Only time, and perhaps the sales of the next release, will tell.
