Call of Duty is one of the most popular franchises in the gaming landscape, and while some titles in the series have been more well-received than others, every single one is immensely popular at release.

Despite this, tracking the player counts of the newer CoD games has become more and more difficult, with Activision closely guarding the stats.

This frustrates the community as they're curious about how many players are online, and in previous titles, it was possible to see an exact number on the menus. With Modern Warfare 3 reportedly coming in November of 2023, Call of Duty fans want the classic player count feature back.

Popular CoD account ModernWarzone took to Twitter on July 7 to remind players of a time when "Call of Duty games showed us a live player count and even a world map of where those players were playing from in the menu."

While this classic feature didn't add to the actual multiplayer gameplay, it was interesting to see where all of the community was located around the globe, as well as the various CoD hotspots.

For one user, the removal of this feature is proof "COD has mastered backtracking on UI and taking away great features and replacing them with lesser ones."

Others just "wish it would return" and argue "everyone would be happy" if the classic feature was added to MW3. It's unlikely a system like this would take much development time, but fans are not convinced these stats will ever be openly shown again in-game.

Why was the population counter removed from Call of Duty?

Although there has been no answer directly from Activision or the devs, it's speculated that the counter was removed to stop the community from seeing a title's player count drop over time.

Discussions about whether a game is dying and a player base getting smaller can often lead to a snowball effect, with more fans leaving as they believe a title is getting less popular.

By keeping the population stats hidden, it's impossible for the players to track the exact numbers, which means we never know whether the player count is trending up or down.

While adding the classic player count menu feature would certainly please the community in MW3, it's extremely unlikely Activision will even consider it.
