If you like to pay for your Call of Duty fix monthly, you're in luck - Activision is reportedly working on a subscription service to help expand the shooter series' chart-topping potential. Just when you think we can't milk the franchise for anything else, there's a new money-making scheme.
We can barely keep up with what's going on in the Call of Duty world right now thanks to Microsoft's impending acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Alongside confirmation Modern Warfare 2 is 2022's big game, we've got reports of Warzone 2, the delayed Vanguard Season 2, and those continued whispers of a full-blown Zombies. So, how about adding a subscription service to the mix?
What Is The Call Of Duty Subscription Service?
Over on Twitter, trusted leaker RalphsValve claims Infinity Ward is working on the "first" Call of Duty subscription, but we'll revisit the "first" later. As well as a UI and UX overhaul presumably coming with 2023's Modern Warfare 2, the notion of a subscription service that gives you year-round access to battle passes and CoD games sounds like a lucrative one.
In response to the leak, the @ModernWarzone account shared its own tweet from last year - claiming that six and 12-month battle pass options were on the way, as well as access to a free Call of Duty game (presumably from the back catalogue). Backing up all of this, @ZestyLeaks shared a screenshot from what looks like the homepage of a CoD subscription service.
Given that Call of Duty has been shooting up the competition since 2003, there are more than enough titles to warrant a subscription service. The question is, how long could it last? Game Pass and PlayStation Plus regularly add more titles to their team, whereas the CoDverse is somewhat limited.
Haven't We Had A Call Of Duty Subscription Service Before?
Yes, yes we have. Some of you might remember Beachhead Studios trialled this very idea back in 2011 with Call of Duty: Elite. It was hardly a success, and even after going free with the release of Black Ops II, it was officially shuttered in 2014. However, as the player base continues to climb - and now that Warzone has cemented itself as the centre of the franchise - it's well worth a revisit.
Despite critiques that Call of Duty is losing its touch and simply recycling ideas (we're looking at you Vanguard), Activision has pulled together an impressive roster of rotating studios. The latest move further implements Infinity Ward as the MVP, as the likes of Sledgehammer and Treyarch watch from the sidelines. Whatever is going on, you could be about to get more bang for your Call of Duty points.
