The dead are rising from their graves, and it's not just because it's Halloween. The next chapter of the CoDverse is here, as Modern Warfare 3 is peeking its head over the parapet and ready to take on the gaming charts in 2023. It just wouldn't be Call of Duty without Zombies, and thankfully, the macabre mode is back.
First appearing in 2008's Call of Duty: World at War, Zombies quickly became a fan-favourite addition to Treyarch's Black Ops game and has since expanded into the wider universe. Now, there's a whole new way to play, as Call of Duty Zombies VR puts a new spin on those rotting rotters.
Call of Duty Zombies VR is coming
Despite its popularity, there's still a sense that Zombies is still the black sheep of the family - notably being absent from Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 but making a return for Sledgehammer's Modern Warfare while being handled by Treyarch.
The CoD Zombies VR experience comes courtesy of Contractors: VR and some clever modding. As shown by YouTuber AwakenToast, someone has modded Zombies into Contractors: VR, with the appropriately named CoDz BO1: Kino Der Toten mod. It's an impressive build that can be downloaded from mod.io.
The iconic Kino Der Toten map from Black Ops and Black Ops 3 has been rebuilt in Contractors and it feels just like we're back in the crumbling theatre. Alongside the Kino Der Toten loading screen, this round-based experience has everything from barrier building to weapons like the M14.
What do we know about Modern Warfare 3 Zombies?
Due to the high price of most VR headsets, we doubt Activision would splash out on a full-blown Zombies VR game - especially as it seems reluctant to give us a Zombies standalone aside from Call of Duty: World at War – Zombies on iOS. At least the undead aren't being sent back to their graves just yet.
Modern Warfare 3 marks a milestone as the first time Zombies will appear in a MW game, while Operation Deadbolt will be slightly different. This time, the threat comes from the Terminus Outcomes private military who Zakhaev has hired.
As well as boasting the largest Zombies map ever, it will play as more of an open-world experience. Round-based Zombies is gone, and we'll once again be taking on the loot and exofill style of gameplay from Cold War's Outbreak.
Launching alongside the main game on November 10, MW3 Zombies promises to be the biggest and bloodiest outing yet, but still, we're left dreaming of a Zombies VR experience. Remembering we still haven't got that rumoured Treyarch Zombies standalone, we haven't got much hope for a VR spin-off.
