Call Of Duty Future Warfare Leaks

If you look back through the annals of any great video game franchise, chances are you'll find the games that could've been. From Silent Hills to DOOM 4, Star Wars 1313 to Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the history books are filled with some great what-ifs. Now, it's Call of Duty's turn.

While we're used to booting up our consoles every year since 2003 (aside from 2004) to play the annual CoD game, the shooter series has its own murky depths of titles that never saw the light of day. Amazing concepts like Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty: Vietnam and Vicarious Visions' Call of Duty: Roman Wars tragically fell, and among them, Call of Duty: Future Warfare is one of the most infamous.

The tragic story of Call of Duty: Future Warfare

2010 saw a fractured Infinity Ward hand the reins to Neversoft to create a futuristic CoD spin-off that would involve low-gravity gunplay, the introduction of Clan Wars (called The Emergent War), exosuit perks as hardware in multiplayer, and at least one mission set on the Moon. Sadly, the codenamed NX1/Future Warfare was scrapped.

We previously saw footage leak in January 2024, with former Neversoft developer Brian Bright confirming its legitimacy. Bright said that a large amount of multiplayer had been completed alongside two or three story missions, with Future Warfare supposed to launch in 2013 instead of Ghosts.

Give a tantalising of what could've been, it seems a beta build of Future Warfare has made its way online. Apparently an Xbox 360 beta build of NX1, snippets have been doing the rounds on Reddit, with CoD fanatics poring over the lost sci-fi shooter. Although sharing the build would be against Reddit's terms and conditions, the comments are full of those explaining how you can play for yourselves.

One critic says Future Warfare 'sucks', but if you want to try it out, it seems pretty easy. It's clear to see the connective tissue between NX1 and Ghosts, so it's no surprise that Neversoft served as a support studio on Infinity Ward's eventual release. In fact, assets from Future Warfare were apparently reused for both Ghosts and Advanced Warfare.

Bright confirmed that Future Warfare was going to be set around 30-40 years in the future, but in an interview with Why Now Gaming, confirmed it fell apart because the Neversoft team didn't know how anything worked in the IW engine. Thankfully, Neversoft got at least some recognition, with it helping craft the Spec Ops Chaos Mode as part of Modern Warfare 3's DLC.

It's hard to pinpoint where NX1 ends and Ghosts begins, but with Future Warfare being so far into development, we're glad its work wasn't wasted. There have been plenty of rumours that we're returning to a futuristic era of CoD once Black Ops 6 is out of the way, but for now, we'll have to look back at Future Warfare before we can look to the future of the franchise.
