Pokemon Scarlet & Violet might have sorted itself out now, but damn, was it in a sorry state when it launched. Players have come to expect the very best from Game Freak, and for good reason thanks to 27 years of chart-topping Pokemon games.

We assumed one of Nintendo's biggest properties would be getting the best love, care, and attention that could be afforded to it. That didn't seem to be the case, as Scarlet & Violet launched in the buggiest state that a Pokemon game ever has.

It's a massively disappointing opening to a generation, and with big changes at the top of the Elite Four, there are questions about whether the franchise needs to try something different. In the meantime, it looks like the competitors are embarrassing Game Freak with Pokemon-like games a million miles better.

Cassette Beasts is what Scarlet & Violet think they are

If you want a new RPG focusing on monster collection, Cassette Beasts has revealed a brand-new 16-minute gameplay video. Showing what to expect from the open-world RPG, it looks like it's coming for Nintendo's crown in the field.

There are a few key differences between this title and Pokemon, and rather than capturing monsters peppered around the game's world, players collect recordings of the critters that allow them to transform into them.

It's yet another turn-based game, with a new chemistry system designed to inflict status effects. Cassette Beasts is definitely not Pokemon, and that's good news because we know Nintendo would sue their asses off. Still, it's certainly Pokemon-shaped enough to fill the hole inside of you if Scarlet & Violet let you down.

When Is Cassette Beasts coming out?

Cassette Beasts has a demo live on both Steam and the Microsoft Store if you fancy taking the title for a spin now, but thankfully, we don't have long to wait for the game to officially arrive.

This monster mash is set to launch on April 26, so if Pokemon burned you, then your balm is just around the corner. We've seen rips on the classic formula of Nintendo's pride and joy - but this could be the best yet.
