CD Projekt Red has got a lot on its plate. Plenty is happening in The Witcher camp, with a full remake of the first game to set to follow The Witcher 3's impressive (if late) next-gen upgrade.

It's a hugely exciting notion for fans, and that's not even mentioning the countless codenamed projects in the works for the franchise.

The codenamed Project Sirius has been fobbed off to The Molasses Flood. However, it's been brought into question when CD Projekt Red had to clarify that its status has changed dramatically. Still, it isn't going anywhere.

Project Sirius is restarting development

CDPR clarifies Witcher Project Sirius status amid cancellation rumours

A recent financial earnings call from CD Projekt Red has confirmed the status of Project Sirius, and though some fans thought it could be cancelled, the truth is pretty far from it.

The team has revealed that instead of being axed as theorised, the game has actually restarted its production. "So this is a project which is, I would say, insourced. It's also new to us in terms of design and format," says President Adam Kiciński.

"For those reasons, it's very different from the big productions we are known for. To stay competitive, we have to keep looking for new ways to extend our franchises," he adds. "At the same time, we need to be ready to reevaluate our original concepts, even if the development work is already underway."

We previously reported that Project Sirius was basically The Witcher's answer to The Division, but with things starting from scratch, we don't know whether this will still be the case. At the moment, we're picturing something similar to The Last of Us' Factions

CD Projekt Red reveal why Project Sirius was restarted

As for why Project Sirius was forced to do a U-turn, Kiciński reveals that it was "a tough choice to make" to restart development on the title, but that it was ultimately the right thing to do.

"Our intention was to cut costs early and give ourselves time for reassessment," Kiciński says. "We don't want to carry on with projects that we are not aligned with. So basically, that's all we would like to share about Project Sirius for now."

It's hard to keep track of all the Witcher strands right now, and by the sounds of it, CDPR is equally struggling to keep all its ducks in a row. We don't know what's next for the project, but there's one certain thing - it's going to be a while before it actually arrives.
