Civilization 7 was shown off again at Gamescom 2024, and while I was lucky enough to go hands-on with the grandaddy of 4X strategy titles, I was also able to catch up with the series' Creative Director, Ed Beach.

Civilization 7 is aiming to launch on PC and consoles (including Nintendo Switch) next year, but as longtime fans will know, the launch is just the beginning. I asked how the team is looking ahead to expansions.

Civ 7 dev suggests new Ages could come in expansions

Civilization 7 will debut a new Ages system, which Beach says will be "the hardest thing" for fans to get used to.

I asked how its arrival would shift how the team looks at expansion content further down the line. "I can't say anything about expansions, but I'll hint at a few things," Beach jokes.

"The Age system we have now is very nicely modular, and if you look at it, one age just plugs into the back end of the next, and they sort of plug together almost like, you know, adapters going into the wall or something like that.

"It lets us do different things for the expansions, or have different opportunities in the future. In the past, expansions were always layered on the board, and then we're gonna be doing a lot of stuff on top of the game.

"And we're definitely going to be enhancing, supporting, adding more content, and more Civs to the historical foundation we start with.

"But expansions are gonna take a little bit of a different look this time and it's because of that modular nature of the game that we can do different things with them."
