When Warzone 2 was released back in November of 2022, it was intended to be an evolution of the original WZ1 formula with a new map and weapons.

While certainly different from the days of Verdansk and Caldera, fans have noticed that the WZ2 devs are slowly re-integrating and testing out older WZ1 features.

Whether it's the brief return of one-shot snipers, Resurgence, Plunder and even sprinting while plating, for some players it feels like WZ2 is becoming more and more like the original Warzone.

This has led the community to question whether Warzone 2 should even exist, and if the devs should have just stuck with WZ1.

Taking to the CODWarzone subreddit, user Street_Original5163 has questioned the "point" of Warzone 2, and whether the game was even necessary now the devs have brought back so many classic features.

"The entire history of Warzone 2’s post-launch development has been nothing but rolling back every horrible change or re-adding content that was already in WZ1."

A lot of the community agreed with this argument, putting forward that Activision's primary motive for a sequel was to "sell new skins" and to "get you to walk away from your past purchases."

With WZ2 & WZ1 being so similar, certain players feel betrayed that the OG title is being shut down soon, effectively deleting their progress and any purchased content they paid for. This has led to a huge amount of frustration, with fans arguing "They are literally pulling the plug out of the wall so you can no longer play it."

When does Warzone 1 finally shut down permanently?

According to a Call of Duty blog released back in June, the original Warzone will shut down on September 21, 2023. This means "all Caldera gameplay, player progression, inventories and online services will expire on that date."

For a lot of CoD fans, this will be an extremely sad day after experiencing so many great moments in the OG Warzone.

Let's hope Activision can deliver a brilliant experience with the integration of MW3 into Warzone 2, but it's very unlikely to please the players who spent so much time and money in the soon-to-be-deleted WZ1.
