With the Modern Warfare 3 reveal event set to kick off in Warzone 2 and the November 10 release date finally confirmed, the excitement around 2023's Call of Duty is at an all-time high.

However, a set of rumours have sparked alarm bells within the community, with content creators issuing "ominous" warnings about an upcoming announcement.

According to them, the news may "signify the end of an era of our beloved game franchise" as we know it, hinting the new information is going to cause a lot of frustration.

As expected, widespread speculation has begun, with a lot of fans convinced that MW3 will have the last ever single-player campaign.

CoD fans worried 'ominous' warnings mean no more campaigns

Taking to Twitter on August 14, content creator ProReborn revealed that they'd heard through the "grapevine about something that happened in CoD and the internet will be in shambles when it surfaces."

According to them, it's something that will "signify the end of an era of our beloved game franchise," but they refused to disclose the details, claiming "professionally and personally, I don't want to be the person to break that news."

This "ominous" tweet quickly sparked a multitude of theories, with one of the most popular being posted to GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit regarding single-player campaigns. A lot of fans are convinced that the devs are going to sideline CoD stories totally in favour of multiplayer content.

While this would come with backlash, CoD campaigns take a lot of resources to create and are rarely played more than once. On the other hand, it seems unlikely because CoD storylines are a great way to build up characters who are often sold as Operators. Remember, all of these theories are pure speculation at the moment.

What else could the 'ominous' CoD announcement be?

Of course, this news that will reportedly arrive in "due time" is still a complete mystery, so all of the theories should be taken with a pinch of salt for now.

However, fans do have some other speculative predictions, including Activision ditching yearly title releases in favour of live service updates for multiplayer, no more zombies, and no more physical releases.

It's possible one of these suggestions is correct, but for now, we'll just have to wait for the official news to drop. Either way, it's safe to say that CoD fans are prepared for the worst.
