Shooters are still rife in 2023, with Modern Warfare II and swathes of free-to-play titles still dominating charts, so it was a surprise to see Six Days in Fallujah make an attempt to challenge them - but what it proved to be was even worse.
The game is massively controversial, flexing an attitude to Iraqi forces in Fallujah that has been widely deemed racist and prejudiced, with many feeling that the game "based on true events" is stretching its adaptation to levels that are designed to point a finger at Iraqi people.
But the game's comeback is in full swing, even despite Konami dropping the game due to its controversial themes. As it enters early access on Steam, it seems players are loving it as an antithesis to Call of Duty.
Six Days in Fallujah is a hit
Although there are a tonne of controversies that have been pulled into the orbit of Six Days in Fallujah, it looks very much as though it's going to make a splash upon its official release.
The game's early access is in full swing on Steam, and so far, it has seen a wealth of positive responses from fans and those who want to see it perform well. Out of the 4,093 reviews currently on the game's Steam page, 3,442 are positive.
"I've only played for a couple hours so far, but here's my first impression: As someone who's been in similar real-life situations, this game does a great job at getting pretty close to the real experience as far as not knowing what to expect," reads one early review.
Another added, "The devs haven't hid the fact that the game is an early release so keep that in mind before you buy it. With that said, holy crap I have never played a game like this before." Saying they're an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, they said, "This game comes as close to actual combat out of any game I've ever played."
"Finally, a realistic shooter... Give it a few minutes and a few updates and it'll be one of the best Mil Sims on the market," says a third, while a fourth concluded, "Amazing future as long as devs continue updating, polishing and listening to the community." It seems most of you are willing to forget the real-life comparisons.
Six Days in Fallujah's early access is doing exactly what it set out to
In a short heading on the game's Steam page, Six Days in Fallujah's development team has revealed exactly why the game has entered early access, especially after spending so long in development.
"We're making Six Days available now in the hope of attracting an enthusiastic community of players who are interested in a real-world tactical shooter and can help us shape Six Days for years to come," reads the statement from Highwire Games. Well, they've certainly done it.
It looks like eitherĀ Six Days in Fallujah has shed its controversies, or players are engaging with it in spite of it - either way, it's a hit so far.
