Call of Duty League | Infinity Ward
The Call of Duty future remains in the firm hands of Infinity Ward, whose Modern Warfare franchise has produced absolute classics and arguably the most divisive title yet. With the 2023 title, Modern Warfare 2, being the main game for two years amid an annual release hiatus and an overall franchise breather, fans and players alike are hoping that the sequel to the 2019 variant doesn't make the same mistakes as before.
Modern Warfare splits opinions with players quite heavily. On one hand, arguing that the gameplay engine was the finest Call of Duty has ever seen, while the other fist slaps back that horribly designed maps and new movement mechanics made it unbearable.
Becoming faced with the next two years of his career being devoted to Modern Warfare 2, OpTic Texas' Brandon "Dashy" Otell has now reminisced on the 2019 instalment and has detailed seven reasons why Modern Warfare "ruined" the Call of Duty franchise entirely.
How Did Modern Warfare Ruin CoD?
Dashy, who is a three-time Pro League All-Star, took to his Twitch stream to detail why Modern Warfare was such a bad game.
"I think Modern Warfare, the one that came out two years ago, literally ruined CoD, I was talking to Matt ["FormaL" Piper] about this. Think about how much s**t that game introduced, like doors, f**king tac sprint, f**king s***ty ass maps, killing in one bullet, Warzone, bloom, 40 million attachments on your gun, dynamic aim assist. That game f**king ruined it now," he said.
The destructive elements, such as doors, movement mechanics, and the extensive gunsmith were all heavily criticised for "over-complicating" the game. Dashy added, "I actually do believe that," fending off any doubts that he was baiting.
Dashy's criticism isn't alone either, as fellow OpTic royalty Seth "Scump" Abner was fined during the MW season for openly bashing the game as "the worst Call of Duty ever".
Will Modern Warfare 2 Be The Same?
Luckily for Dashy, the developers have already begun to detail that each weapon in Modern Warfare 2 won't have as many attachment slots as the gunsmith in Vanguard - albeit pros are already baffled by the sheer volume of choice at hand - and that the sliding will change to add dolphin diving into the mix.
Scump previously latched on to rumours that Slide Cancelling will be removed, saying that it could "add years to his career", adding hope that Infinity Ward might be looking to revert some of the problems that they created.
Whether Modern Warfare 2 will be able to go back and rectify its predecessors' mistakes is yet to be seen. With a promising engine and some fine-tuning to Dashy's hit list, they might just be onto a winning method that can revive Call of Duty's multiplayer woes.
